The JLP on JPSCo Discount

Press Release From The Jamaica Labour Party - 2024/07/23:

Jamaica Labour Party Welcomes Discount Announced by JPS, Urges Further Consideration for Customers & Quicker Restoration of Electricity

The governing Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) welcomes as a step in the right direction the announcement by the Jamaica Public Service (JPS) of a discount for approximately 350,000 residential customers, under its Hurricane Beryl relief programme.

The JPS announced on Tuesday that a 20% discount will be applied to customers who use 150 kWh of electricity or less for the month.

The announcement came following concerns from stakeholders including Energy Minister, Daryl Vaz, who on Sunday publicly urged the electricity distributor to show compassion to Jamaicans affected by Hurricane Beryl.

While welcoming the announcement, Deputy General Secretary Richard Creary is urging the light and power company to consider what additional steps may be taken to ease burdens facing consumers of electricity.

"We also urge the Jamaica Public Service to intensify efforts to restore electricity to consumers in sections of the island, including St. Elizabeth and Clarendon in particular, where some residents remain severely affected by lack of electricity", Mr. Creary commented.

The Jamaica Labour Party Deputy General Secretary also commended Energy Minister, Daryl Vaz, for his persistent lobbying to have restoration of electricity expedited and to ensure that Jamaicans are treated in a fair, just and equitable manner by utility companies.

"It is good that Minister Vaz has been clear in his messaging that the Government of Jamaica is on the side of the people and will do all within its lawful power to ensure that Jamaicans are treated fairly and the period of discomfort caused by Hurricane Beryl is as short as possible", Mr. Creary commented.

Can we get the government to help those that are throwing up wire's on JPS Power line, that is causing so much problems for the legal customer's. Please ask the JPS to start assist the illegal customer's to register and start paying their bills and Jamaicans can now have no more problems with stealing electricity and JPS will make more money in their pockets. We have been suggesting this to JPS for couple year's now. It is about time. Take action now JPS.

The JPS has tried that many times. The prepaid system. They sold solar equipment to customers. The legal customers don't have a problem paying for those who steal electricity. The last time Kelly Tomlin the former head of JPS took decisive against those stealing electricity, I understand she was summoned to Jamaica House!
