Businessman Attacked with a Hammer in Christiana, Out of Hospital

Many Jamaicans were shocked when they read my post about the man who brutally attacked a businessman with a hammer in Christiana, Manchester, yesterday. I want to thank the concerned individual who brought this incident to my attention.

I also expressed my concerns about some of the racially charged remarks made by onlookers. However, someone told me, "Vernon, it wasn't a racist comment but rather an envious one."

Today, I received more information about the incident. It appears the attacker is known in the area. Local business owners have been struggling with a high level of theft by some individuals who visit their establishments. According to one source, it is alleged that the attacker slapped the businessman's wife, prompting the businessman to defend her.

The attacker later returned, seeking revenge, and launched an assault that could have easily turned fatal. There were concerns about the businessman's physical condition, and he was taken to the University of the West Indies (UWI) hospital. Fortunately, he has since been released from the hospital.

There is no information as to whether or not the man who allegedly carried out the act, has been arrested.

Once again this brings to sharp focus the high level of violence and aggression in the society. This must be dealt with now!
