Shortage of Laminated Food Handlers Cards Irks Clients

Wentworth Charles

Persons have been complaining to me that it is about two years since they have not been able to get their food handlers laminated cards. This card shows that one has met the food handlers requirements of the health authority.

The complaints have come from those persons who fall under the South Eastern Regional Health Authority which is chaired by Attorney at Law Wentworth Charles. The matter was brough to his attention and he replied promptly

I saw the document which was issued in place of the laminated card and this document last for one year. Citizens complain that one cannot be walking around with this bulky letter. They are correct. Mr. Charles says that over in Spanish Town they have to produce up to 20,000 cards annually. There was a backlog but this has been cleared.

In order for one to get one's food handler's permit one has to pay. Mr. Charles we need to ensure that the revenues coming in can cover the cost of producing these cards. The next step is to have the equipment and the staff to do the work. We could also look at the possibility of having one department providing these cards for all government department requiring these cards. The electoral office and other departments produce similar cards. It is possible that that the electoral office machines and staff could assist?

This seems to be a management problem. We have data to show the annual demand for these cards. Let's just plan and deal with it and minimize the inconvenience to the clients. These are some of the things that the people blame politicians for.

Mr. Wentworth Charles, push a little fire under the tail of management. Note that the letter does not have a picture nor anything to uniquely identify the holder of the letter. This letter could be used by another person illegally. If we had a National Identification System in place then the NIDS number would be indicated on the document. The NIDS would be used to identify the person and the number on the letter would indicate who received the permit.

I must admit that the card looks like something that can be easily replicated. We need to update this card to include a barcode or a QR code. With that, it would be easier for an inspector to scan the code into a phone application to check if the handlers permit is valid. Over to you Mr. Wentworth Charles.

Instead of laminating, why not produce a Credit Card style permit with all the details back and front? Picture, name, TRN, address, the works.

You sound like you should be in charge. A credit card like card is a great idea.
