The Day The Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade Ministry Helped a Thankful Member of the Diaspora

Hon. Kamina Johnson-Smith

This is a story which will lift your spirit. Put yourself in the place of this person. You are in the United States and your spouse is in Jamaica. He is ill and is in a serious condition after suffering from a stroke. You have passed your three score and ten and more than likely most of your friends have gone ahead of you. At that stage of your life your pool of friends have started to dry up. The system sometimes need oiling and things no longer move the way they   should move. Even with your major crisis you will find that you just have to join the line.

This lady had a challenge. Her husband is deteriorating and she now has an anxiety problem because she needs to get to Jamaica now and her Jamaican passport has expired. She needs emergency papers from the New York Consulate to travel. Failure to get the documents in time could mean she not being able to see her husband who could end up dying. There is another serious message from Jamaica, her husband has suffered another stroke and he has to be re-admitted to the hospital. It a race against time and possible death.

Out of desperation she contacted me. I have to start working immediately. I am in the bathroom but has urgent as my situation was, hers was more urgent. With a few emails, telephone calls and sound advise based on years of helping others like this lady, I succeeded in assisting her. I just received a picture of her passport and emergency travel document and she will be on that plane this weekend to Jamaica.

Andrew Wynter
Let's pray and hope that her husband continues to fight for life so that both can enjoy their company this weekend. Thanks fo the lady who I had to be very firm with and I was able to convince her that I would do my best to assist. When you are in a desperate situation like that you no longer become rationale. She worked with me. Thanks to the head of PICA Mr. Andrew Wynter, Thanks to the Permanent Secretary's Assistant and the receptionist at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade and thanks to the staff at the New York Consulate. You have made today,  a great day for a thankful member of the diaspora.

I was not able to get through to Minister Kamina Johnson-Smith who is travelling but your officers in Kingston did a great job Minister.

Note:
It is important that Jamaicans with their green cards living in the US and who qualify for citizenship status, apply for it. Ensure that your Jamaican passport is not expired also. You can have dual citizenship.
