Outstanding Leader and Educator Passed On

The Hon, Dr. Alfred Sangster, OJ, CD, JP, PhD

The Hon. Dr. Alfred Sangster, former Head of the University of Technology Jamsica has passed on. He died last night.

Dr. Sangster was a dedicated public servant, and he had a vision for the university as its Principal. The university has achieved those objectives over the years.

Under his leadership, the college produced many outstanding graduates who have served with distinction locally and internationally. Under his leadership, students not only excelled in academics but also in the creative arts and sports.

He was known to be a humble man who was not driven by the trappings of wealth. Dr. Sangster was known to get his hands dirty by working with the groundsmen in maintaining the grounds of the college. He was frequently seen playing dominoes with his students or on the field playing footbalL with students.

The Hon. Dr. Alfred Sangster was a one-of-a-kind leader. To his children, I say be strong. Your dad lived a long and good life, selflessly for the people. He was ninety-five years old at his passing.

  1. He gave me my first job as a lecturer in communication September 1985 at CAST He was very committed to graduating students who could hit the ground running so he started a six week programme in entrepreneurship in 1987 all students had to complete to graduate then

  9. Wow! What an excellent concept where all students had to do a 6 week programme in entrepreneurship.

Marcus Garvey must have been dreaming self empowerment and self determination to him.

I recall seeing him walking up and down the place being a hands on principal instead of being ceremonial like many these days.

All students knew him and could talk to him without appointment or fear.
    Rest in Honour Sir Sangster.
