Namibia's First President Has Died

Sam Nujoma

Sam Nujoma, Namibia’s fiery freedom fighter and its first president, dies aged 95. The freedom fighter who led Namibia into independence from apartheid South Africa in 1990 served as its president for fifteen years.

Sam Nujoma is the last of the African leaders who took their country out of colonial and minority white rule. They are South Africa's Nelson Mandela, Zimbabwe’s Robert Mugabe, Zambia’s Kenneth Kaunda, Tanzania’s Julius Nyerere and Mozambique’s Samora Machel.
