JLP's Central Executive Supports Government’s Decision to Appeal Constitutional Court Ruling

Press Release From the Jamaica Labour Party, May 18, 2025:

The Central Executive of the Jamaica Labour Party, on Sunday, May 18, 2025, threw its support behind the Government of Jamaica’s decision to appeal the ruling of the Constitutional Court that the States of Public Emergency imposed between January 2018 and February 2023 were unconstitutional.

The Central Executive noted that it respects the ruling of the Court; however, it expressed confidence that an appeal, pursued to its fullest extent, will affirm as lawful the actions of the Parliament, the Government, and the Governor General in declaring the States of Emergency, which have contributed to a major reduction in violent crime, including murder.

Members of the Central Executive also supported the Government’s position that Jamaica’s high rate of violent crime, which led to the declaration of the enhanced security measure a few years ago, was in fact tantamount to a state of emergency.

  1. Was it constitutional when a State of Emergency was established in 1970's and senior JLP representatives thrown in detention in Red Fence and many of their own supporters throne in Wire Fence in Up Park Camp? Have they forgotten the shame of that SOE?

  2. Should we continue to exact revenge or right the wrong? Who in the govt or opposition were making laws or policies in the 70s? Why is it so difficult to do what is right and just?
