Press Release From The JTA, June 24, 2025

Lasonja Harrison

Three candidates contested the 2025 JTA President-Elect Election held June 16 - 20, 2025. They were:

  • LaSonja Harrison, Principal St Faiths Primary, St Catherine
  • Dr Maureen Mullings Nelson, Lecturer at the Mico University College, Kingston
  • Mr Jermaine Williams, Teacher at the Mannings High, Westmoreland

A total of 11,610 votes were cast in the election, which was held using the Face - to - Face modality. Each candidate received votes as follows:

  • LaSonja Harrison – 6651 votes.
  • Dr Maureen Mullings Nelson – 1883.
  • Mr Jermaine Williams - 2771.

Mrs. Harrison, having secured the highest number of votes in the preliminary count, is hereby declared President-Elect Designate.

The winner will be officially proclaimed at the 61st Annual Conference scheduled for August 18–20, 2025, at the Princess Grand Hotel, Hanover.

Editor's Note
This is the woman who refused to sign the agreement with the government when she was president of the JTA. I remember many blasting her for not signing the document. It is interesting to note that she is back as president with massive support.

It would be interesting to ascertain if she is the first JTA president to be reelected. The question being asked if she will drop the court case seeking to have the court decide whether, under the JTA constitution, teachers can vote in person or not, to accept the government's salary proposal.

It seems to me that the question needs to be answered whether or not she is the president-elect.
