What's Happening June 9, 2025 - It Could Have Been a Disaster!

Overburdened Health Sector

The health sector is under severe pressure based on the feedback I am getting from citizens. It took three months to get a biopsy test result from the University Hospital. I have received complaints about people not being able to locate their relatives at the UWI hospital.

This morning I received another report of a lady whose daughter had to pay for an ambulance to take her to a private institution to do a CT scan. Her mother is still at the Spanish Town hospital without a bed and is not able to receive the service of an ambulance to take her to get the CT scan done. Listen to the report below from her daughter.

This family continues to face mounting expenses that they cannot afford.

Road Accidents/Incidents Continue

The accidents/incidents continue on our roads, and it is having a significant negative impact on our health sector. Thanks to Roy Rayon for this report.

I also heard of an accident involving a tanker carrying gas that overturned on the north coast. There was gas running on the road, and the road was not blocked off. Based on the report that I got, this was another disaster waiting to happen.

Do we have an emergency plan for incidents/accidents like this? ODPEM and other state agencies should have been contacted immediately. The road should have been blocked off, and a national announcement made advising people to avoid the area. Years ago, we had an incident like this in Runaway Bay when a tanker carrying aviation fuel to the Sangster International Airport in St James crashed and overturned. No one suffered injury in the crash, but the inferno that followed resulted in 23 deaths, and approximately 70 people battled for their lives in the hospital.

The Emergency Alert System set up by journalists to be used in times of emergencies could have been used to alert all media houses. Media persons could have then alerted the nation immediately. Many of us only heard of the accident on social media. I am trusting the reports from my readers. I have not seen any information in the traditional media house, nor any statement from anyone about what could have been a major disaster. Mum is the word!

Spelling Errors

I thought I was the only one who made spelling errors in my blogs. You have a spelling problem in the supermarkets, also. While we can recognise the errors in the spelling, can you imagine the errors made in the prices? Please send me pictures of street signs with errors. We need to get them changed.

Editor's Note
After completing this blog, I saw a message from Mr. Stephen Davidson at the Ministry of Health. He advised me that he contacted the SMO, and the matter is currently being dealt with.

Thanks to the staff at the Ministry of Health for their assistance.

  2. The amount of needless and avoidable crashes on the nation's roads, are some of the reasons why so many citizens are not able to get assistance in our health care system.

    1. The high level of violence in society and our poor eating habits are also helping to exacerbate the problems in the health sector.
