JUTC Appeals to Jamaicans to Help Stop Stoning of Buses !

Press Release From The JUTC, July 17, 2025

Owen Ellington, Managing Director of JUTC

Spanish Town, St. Catherine — The Jamaica Urban Transit Company Limited (JUTC) is appealing to members of the public to desist from stoning its buses following another incident on the evening of July 16, 2025, involving one of the company’s units that had been commissioned into service just the day before.

At approximately 7:45 p.m., a JUTC bus operating on Route 32B to Spanish Town via Washington Boulevard was attacked by unidentified individuals in the vicinity of Drewsland. Stones were thrown at the unit, resulting in significant damage to the front windshield. The bus was fully occupied at the time; however, no injuries were sustained by passengers. The incident has been reported to the Jamaica Constabulary Force, and investigations are currently underway. This reckless behavior not only threatens the safety of our drivers and commuters but also undermines the company’s ability to deliver reliable public transportation across the Kingston Metropolitan Transport Region area.

Reported areas of recent stoning incidents include:

Three Miles ( Majestic Gardens)

Seaview Gardens

Six Miles

Washington Boulevard to Zadie Gardens

Hagley Park Road Vicinity Three Miles

Cumberland

Christian Gardens

Greater Portmore Area

Passagefort

Caymanas

Harbour View

Sir Florizel Glasspole Blvd in the vicinity of Flour Mills

Bayshore Park Bus stop

Vicinity of  Donald Quarie Bus stop

Managing Director of JUTC, Mr. Owen Ellington, expressed grave concern about these acts of vandalism:

“We strongly condemn these attacks on our buses. Stoning buses endangers lives, damages valuable national assets, and erodes public confidence in public transportation services. We call on citizens to stand with us in protecting our commuters and urge anyone with information on the perpetrators to report it to the Jamaica Constabulary Force immediately.”

The JUTC wishes to remind the public that these buses are a critical part of national assets, serving thousands of commuters daily, including students, senior citizens, and workers. The damage caused by stoning not only incurs significant repair costs but can also lead to service disruptions.

We are urging communities to work with us to prevent further incidents. Anyone with information is encouraged to contact the nearest police station or call/WhatsApp us at 876-570-1789.

The safety and security of commuters remains our top priority. Together, we can ensure that public transportation remains safe, reliable, and accessible to all.

Editors Note
No one is responding to the JUTC WhatsApp line 876 570-1789. No indication is given as to what time persons should call.

The JUTC should enlist volunteer passengers as supervisors on the buses. These persons would use their phones to update persons who manage the various routes.

Buses should be equipped with an alarm system which can alert the emergency bike riders' support team.

Anyone who damages public property, such as transportation vehicles or utility companies' infrastructure, for example, should be treated as a terrorist. Give them the cat'o'-nine.

A reward of JAD1 million should be offered to anyone who identifies someone who willfully damages a bus and has been convicted in a court of law for the act.

  2. This is why the Opposition, their operatives and the Gleaner must mind their rhetoric. Simple minded people will take their cues from them. There are people who will sabotage anything to get their preferred party elected. It's their party over and above the country, their children, their family and even over their own individual wellbeing.
