Many Unaware of Earthquake in Jamaica This Afternoon

Yes, there was an earthquake in Jamaica this afternoon, and if you ask someone on the street or travelling in a motor vehicle about it, most likely they will be hearing about it for the first time. Experts in disaster management and other related fields have expressed concerns to me about how we deal with such matters. We should remind organizations to have earthquake drills and advise people on what to do to minimize the impact of an earthquake when we have a tremor similar to one we had this afternoon. The Earthquake Unit has a role to play in that regard.

Jamaica needs an effective emergency alert system, but until that time, we need to make effective use of what we have.

Some people believe that by sending out a press release and putting the information on social media, the nation has been informed. That is not the complete answer. 

I recommend that at the earliest possible date, we review our system of informing the public about pending emergencies and emergency matters. 

I must commend the Meteorological Service of Jamaica for always doing a great job of keeping the nation informed about weather matters. They also educate us about the weather. I hope that their Doppler radar system is back in service.
