The Things We Say And Do - Are They Correct?

I invite you to have a look at some of the things that we say and do. Are we doing and saying the correct things? The fact that someone is highly educated or holds high office does not mean that what they say or do is correct.

First, let us take a look at how we address the Prime Minister. Some will say, Dr. The Most Honourable Andrew Holness. My position is that the national title should come first. Therefore, I prefer The Most Honourable, Dr. Andrew Holness.

For Dr Dana Morris Dixon, I have seen Senator, Dr. The Honourable Dana Morris Dixon. I suggest The Honourable, Dr. Dana Morris Dixon. She is a senator and also a minister.

At functions, speakers who are reluctant to repeat the names of the special guests will simply say, 'All protocols observed.' This does not make any sense. I suggest you say, Chairman, distinguished guests, ladies and gentlemen. Of course, you can mention the chairman's name.

In mentioning the date, we say, for example, August 1st. We should say August 1.

We tend to say, "I would have done..." The question is, did you do it or not?" If you say, for example, "I would have bought the cake if I had sufficient funds," then that seems correct to me. 'I would have' seems to be a phrase that many people use because it has now become hackneyed and stereotypical.

The letter 'H' is silent in the word 'honour'.

Derby is pronounced /darbi/.

We should not say 'reverse back' or 'repeat again'.

If we are going to Mandeville, we say that we are going down to the country. Mandeville is at a higher level than Kingston.

Oftentimes we ask, "Don't it?" This means, do not it. That definitely does not make sense.

You should not say that someone fell off a tree and suffered damages. The word 'damages' is a legal term. It is used to describe the compensation awarded to someone by a court of law. For example, if you win a slander case, the defendant could be ordered to pay you JAD 1,000,000 for damages.

In making announcements, we say, for example, "Go to position number one". One is a number, so why indicate that it is a number?

There are more things that we all say that are incorrect or that we need to think about. Think of some of those and add them as comments to this blog.

I am almost sure that I have made some mistakes in this blog. Please don't murder me!

Greetings Mr. Vernon... I like your suggestion. There is a Protocol Office at Jamaica 🇯🇲 House. You could ask the protical way and maybe they will abopt you suggestion and make what you suggest the Protical way.

    1. I post things here just to share it with the public. The posts are sent to the relevant persons and organizations. You will notice that some leaders have already adopted what I have suggested. The media houses have dealt with the date issue.

  2. Verne, Verne, Verne, I could not agree with you more. Where my shock was turned on is hearing big big Jamaicans using would have as past tense. Like, After the firemen came, they would have put out the fire. Well, you know me, What prevented them? Was there no water? Were the hoses malfunctioning? Why did they bother to take that ride?
I had to bring that kinda talk to the attention of one I heard starting to use it. How that started in Jamaica is totally beyond me, and it seriously hurt my grammar ears. For the life of me, how did that catch on so fast⁉️
But yes, Dearheart, I agree with this blog absolutely. I do because I can, even though it is said that nothing is absolute. As you know, there's a difference here.

  3. It is raining. We must never say the rain is falling, ever. The rain can do nothing but fall. We can also say the 1st of August. So much could be typed here.

  4. Thank you for highlighting the misuse of the language structure and grammar by people who should know better. I wonder why our students are not passing the language exams.
