Realtor Dennis Hickey Says No To Building Hotels on Caymanas Lands

Realtor Dennis Hickey, while on a radio programme with Vernon Derby today, said he does not support the building of hotels on government lands at Caymanas.

He says that there is a need for more housing solutions in Jamaica. Many people feel that we have been building hotels and depriving the people of access to beaches, and now some are proposing building hotels on land and depriving people of places to live.

He was reacting to an article published in a newspaper today.

Realtor Dennis Hickey gives more arguments why the Caymanas lands should not be used for hotel development.

Dennis Hickey makes his final arguments for housing solutions for Caymanas Park, and he also tells you how to contact him.

  1. If the views of a cross section of realtors are canvassed, you may find that some may not agree with him.

    1. This is not a matter just for realtors but for Jamaicans. You did not express your opinion.

  2. The bigger problem is building many individual homes on lots that could accommodate more homes if vertical development were done. Vertical development would require a smaller footprint without sprawling road, power, water and sewerage infrastructure. Individual unit could be elegant and less costly than they now are.

  3. Mr Hickey is on the right track.
Jamaica has over 424 miles of beach but ordinary Jamaicans have access to just about 2 .5 or two and one half miles of beach.

When slavery was abolished in 1838 there were about 450,000 squatters today there are approximately 1,000,000 I mean one million aquatters or a third or more of the population.Ask the PIOJ for verification.

Even though Hotels are like a parasitic industry it provides some lower level jobs and indirect income from craft vending ,transportation, entertainment etc.

It should be noted that under the Hotel Incentives Act they are exempt from direct income taxes and Tarrifs/duties on items imported to build maintain furnish, refurbish or sustain such hotels inclusive of food carrots, tomatoes, meats, eggs ,bed linen etc.

All our governments inherited this going on since 1890 under Governor BLAKE money was also made available at a 3% interest rate for those who wanted to do so.It failed and ended up with the Government. That is how it ended up as a Teachers College in 1956 with Dr Aubrey Phillips father of Dr Peter Phillips being the first Principal. The Present Principal being Dr Isaacs.

The now Moneague College was one such property. The section that was the Hotel was damaged by fire yeaes ago and has not.been looked at since.
This a part of Jamaica's Tourism History must be guarded and refurbished and maintained.
