What The Hell Is Happening On Our Roads?

The tranffic incidents on our roads continue, and soon Dr. Lucien Jones, vice chair of the Road Traffic Advisory Council, will be on the radio blaming speeding. Speeding is a description of the rate at which something is moving. We need to look at the cause of the accident. Yesterday was another horrific accident that resulted in the deaths of three people in May Pen. Reports are that the driver was driving a BMW X6. I wonder if he owned the car. If he owned the car, then he must be a very successful man driving a BMW X6 at age 26! He probably owes the tax department a significant sum. Probably a good person left it in a will for him or gave it to him.

I will list a few possible causes of accidents on our roads:

  1. Driver fatigue
  2. The driver's lack of experience.
  3. Condition of the road.
  4. Health-related matters.
  5. Driver's indisciplined behaviour.
  6. Consumption or use of things that can impair one's judgement, behaviour and response time.
  7. Defective vehicle.
  8. Poor quality tyres.
  9. Tyres are not properly inflated.
  10. Making bad decisions while driving.
  11. Roads not properly marked and with no reflective painting for the medians and sidewalks.
  12. Stray animals on the road.

The challenge is that Dr. Jones and others keep blaming speeding for the frequency of road incidents, which result in casualties and damage to property. The police and media personalities also blame speeding even prior to proper investigation and the findings of such an investigation. The suggestion is to increase the traffic penalties and have police officers on our roads issuing tickets by the minute. This has never and will never solve the problem.

The first step should be to cancel the licenses for all drivers who have accumulated five tickets or more within the last 12 months for one year. This would remove all the poor drivers from our roads immediately, and I guarantee you the deaths on our roads would drop significantly. These drivers whose licenses have been suspended should be required to take driving lessons from a government-approved instructor for at least 20 hours. This would include driving and also participating in classroom instructions.

Jamaica needs leaders who can ensure there is order in the system. Not people who just talk and put out press releases.

We are solving the bus problem and reducing the number of murders in the country, so we can solve the accident problem on our roads.

  1. I keep on saying that the authorities keep on looking at the wrong thing blaming speed for every accident why don't they arrest him the major reasons for most accidents is called improper driving techniques speed can be a contributing factor but not the only factor improper driving techniques is the major factor

  2. Vernon . Lack of discipline and speeding . No respect for the law and the road codes. I see it every day on Washington Blvd and Mandela Hwy . Also Constant Spring Rd. And I hear about it every day. The right turn lanes have become passing lanes at the traffic lights
