189 candidates to contest September 3, General Election In Jamaica

KINGSTON, Jamaica; A total of 189 candidates have been nominated to contest the General Parliamentary Election scheduled for September 3, 2025. Nominations took place Monday, August 18, at designated nomination centres across the island from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.

 

The Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) and the People’s National Party (PNP) have each entered a full slate of candidates to contest the elections in the 63 constituencies. The Jamaica Progressive Party (JPP) fielded candidates in 47 constituencies, while seven candidates were nominated for the

United Independents’ Congress (UIC). The remaining nine candidates will contest the election independently in St. Thomas Eastern, St. James West Central, Hanover Western, Westmoreland Western, Westmoreland Central, Westmoreland Eastern, St. Catherine North Eastern, St. Andrew East Central and St. Andrew South Western.

 

Of the 189 candidates, there are 136 men and 53 women. 

 

A total of six candidates were nominated for the local government by-elections in Denham Town, Chancery Hall and Olympic Gardens, all representing the JLP and the PNP. Nominations for the by-elections took place from 12 noon to 2:00 p.m. An equal number of men and women were nominated for the by-elections, which are also scheduled for September 3.

 

The Electoral Office of Jamaica (EOJ) will now intensify preparations for the Special Services Voting Day on Friday, August 29 and Election Day on Wednesday, September 3, including assigning symbols to the independent candidates, printing of ballots, distribution of supplies and preparation of polling stations.
