A fully integrated, comprehensive transportation system would greatly benefit Jamaica's development. A school bus system could be just a part of that.
This would include:
- Efficient, reliable public transport. Buses, trains, bike taxis, horse-drawn buggies, rickshaws, and pushcarts, particularly in crowded city centers.
- Reliable pothole-free road networks
- Pedestrian-friendly infrastructure eg properly constructed crosswalks and sidewalks
- Cycling paths
- Integration with existing systems (e.g., taxis, buses)
- Note that handcart taxis are now a regular feature in market districts, mainly in the Kingston downtown and Coronation market areas.
The Transport Authority is preparing to regulate bike taxis in Negril and pushcart taxis. A well-planned system would enhance mobility, reduce congestion, and support economic growth.
The partisan political to-and-fro talking is of no real progressive purpose. A national transportation commission in the order of the world-class electoral commission is needed.
This ad hoc political platform approach is counterproductive.
