St. James High School Continues on the Upward Performance Trajectory

Joseph Williams, Principal of St. James High.

St. James High Principal and the administration have come under immense pressure, and the public has been given the impression that the school administration has not performed credibly. If this were a traditional high school, you certainly would not have the chairman of the school board coming on the radio discussing certain matters about the school on air.

The school's name got into the spotlight when a video was circulated showing two female students kissing. It is clear to me that some people believe that this was a human rights issue and wrongly accused the principal of expelling the students. My understanding is that life at the school was becoming difficult for the two kissing girls, and it was affecting the smooth running of the school. The principal, in his wisdom, tried to get the girls transferred to another school.

I was informed that one of the girls had to be transferred from another school to St. James High. The students at St. James High School have been developing pride in their school. They refer to students from other schools who come to St. James and do not conform to the rules as deportee students.

Jamaica For Justice, the chairman of the St. James School Board and other persons in the media came down hard on the principal for his leadership style. They should now commend the school administration, the staff, and the students for this performance. The board has not been functioning for a long time I understand. The Ministry of Education should take a look at the leadership style of this principal, which has turned around one of the most challenging schools in the west.

Below are figures showing the St. James High School CXC pass rate for 2025. I have been informed that discipline among the students has improved dramatically. Congratulations to the principal, the administration, the staff, the studentsand the parents for another good year.

Grade for Agricultural Science is still outstanding.

The policy at St. James High for students in Grade 11 is that all students must do the core subjects, at least one skill, and optional subjects are as is optional for students to choose to do more subjects if they require.

  1. The numbers look pretty good. However I would like to find out the total amount of students that was supposed to sit the exams. Some schools carry out screening before the exams to make their numbers look good.

    1. I believe that you misunderstand how the educational system works. First, we promote students at the primary and secondary levels from class to class, whether they are competent or not in the level that they are at. This does not make sense. If a student is not at the standard to do the CXC, then why enter them to do the CXC and waste their funds? Many students who are in grade 11 have not reached the grade 11 standard. That has to be fixed first.

  2. What you explain is that the Education system is flawed it’s doesn’t change the fact that huge percentage of the students are leaving the system without a subject and I can attest to that.

    1. I only respond to clarify issues my friend that I feel I am competent to respond to. I am a teacher, and I continue to be in touch with schools, the education ministry, and also the JTA. If you follow my blogs and my radio programmes, you will get a clear picture of my position, which cannot be made in one post. I am fully aware of the challenges in the system. My blog is used to lobby for change. You need to join the movement for change.

  3. Go online and read the stories in the online newspapers about St. James High, search my blogs, and also listen to my interviews on my Bark Di Trute YouTube channel with the principal. Whichever yardstick you use, the performance of St. James High this year is something that the school should be commended for, and nothing should detract from that. This is not one of those schools where we send the so-called bright students! I am in touch with past students and past board chairpersons, and others. I now have a good idea of how well the school community has done.
