A Journey Which Could Be Your Journey - Prostate Cancer

It has not been an easy road over the past few months for me, but I give thanks to those who continue to care and give me support. I call for all men over forty years of age to start talking about prostate issues with your doctor. It is very important to do your annual checks, especially if you are 50 years old and older. Please talk to the males in your family and those who are your friends. Prostate challenges will come without warning, like  Nicodemus in the night.

It is important to check not only if you have cancer, but also if you do, how aggressive it is. My stepfather died from prostate cancer, but when we found out, it was too late. The pain one suffers when one reaches a certain state with this cancer is unbearable.

This is one case when you don't know, it will not only hurt you, but it will kill you. I have discovered that the physical examination is crucial. Doctors will be able to ascertain if there are challenges by doing a physical examination. A doctor doing an examination by physically checking your prostate will not convert you to a homosexual. Sitting down on it and doing nothing about it could ensure that your experience hell on earth before you reach there.

My fight continues. I have had to do a biopsy, MRI, bone scan, x-ray, echocardiogram, stress test, blood tests, and two ultrasounds. I now need to see a nephrologist. Today, after spending the whole afternoon at the doctor, I was told that the operation will be sometime in October. I am now on drugs to suppress the cancer, and I have to do another battery of tests.

Today, someone said to me. "Vernon, you don't even look like you are sick."

Each day, I keep the depression away by talking to people, helping those whom I can help, and writing my blogs. I should be back on air soon.

Remember, we will not be here forever, and whatever we acquire, we will leave on this earth. What really matters is the people we meet and the impact we have on others. So, do all the good you can, to all you can, as long as you can. I am going through a journey, and we never know who will next travel the same path. Walk good, my friend.

  1. Thank you for being so bold to share your story Mr. Derby. May the hands of the Lord guide, comfort and heal you. I pray this experience will bring you closer to Him and that even through this, He will get the glory. Be encouraged! All the very best in October!
