Impact of Mental Wellness On Crime!

Mass shooting seems to be trending in the USA for some time now. There is a report today that 4 people are dead and 8 others were wounded after a shooting and a fire at a church. This is the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Grand Blanc Township, Michigan.

Information from US media is that the gunman rammed a vehicle through the front of the church, began shooting and then set the church on fire. It is reported that the alleged criminal was killed.

When I hear these stories, the only answer I can find is that many of these offenders have mental issues. I believe that many of the social problems we have in Jamaica are also impacted by the mental state of the people. How can a grown man rape a seven-year-old? You remember the story I told you about the husband who was having sex with his three stepsons. He is probably at the right hand of satan in hell.

This week, I got a report about a lady being abused. She was punched in the face by her ex-boyfriend, leaving her face black and blue. I am convinced that both she and the ex-boyfriend have a mental challenge. The woman will be bringing up the next generation of criminals. (I have not put all the details of the abuses in the blog.)

I have written this article because there is talk about the murder rate dropping significantly. Yes, the police are working hard, but those mentally unstable people are still out there. Those who murder and rape other people are mentally unstable. They need to be removed from society permanently until they are completely rehabilitated.

You will recall that in one article, I called for social workers to be assigned to all communities. I am making that call again. When people are in trouble, many will not call a number in Kingston. Let's get the social workers on the ground and in touch with the people who can identify social misfits. These social workers should be able to take appropriate actions to deal with social problems, which can lead to criminal actions.

I would love to hear from the bright minds at the UWI. Have we done research on the impact of mental illness on the level of crime in Jamaica, and have we made recommendations on how to deal with the challenge?

Mr Prime Minister, we have spent millions on infrastructure; it is now time to concentrate on the nation's greatest asset - its people. Something is wrong with many of us!
