Relatives and friends at the ceremony start. |
It was refreshing to see an unusual face with a beautiful voice and a demeanor that made one feel that, although one was not at King's House, one had a friend there who made sure nothing was missed. She appeared calm and composed. She was very descriptive. I wondered why there was no caption to inform viewers who the on-site anchor was. She sounded so real that she made her listeners feel at ease. (I have been informed that the host was Stacian Smith.)
I want to ask my friends at JIS a few questions. Do you have a prompter that anchors could use on location? Why was the YouTube channel used to do the broadcast? It was annoying to have those advertisements interrupting a historic function like this.
Next time, JIS should think of having two people commentating. The information given by the host about the development of our democracy should be emulated by other hosts at other similar events.
I note that persons continue to address the Prime Minister as Dr. The Most Andrew Holness. I have said it many times in my blogs that national titles should come before academic titles. The PM should be addressed as The Most Honourable, Dr. Andrew Holness.
The PM's inaugural address was a memorable one. The PNP and the JLP had some memorable slogans, but the JLP 1 PM slogan caught on with the laborites, who normally respond in their usual emphatic manner, "Showa labourites". The PM gave his commitment to serve the people of Jamaica.
The Prime Minister outlined the philosophy that will guide the next JLP government. He very mischievously used the term "The time has come," which was a play on the PNP slogan "Time come," in his speech. This sent the audience into a state of frenzy, and the PM had to take a longer-than-usual pause to allow the audience to settle down.
The Prime Minister went on to talk about doing it for Jamaica. He encouraged the Leader of the Opposition to work with him to make Jamaica a republic. I don't see that happening at all. Many feel that when you have the opposition party getting a significant number of seats, it balances things out. This could mean the abandoning of good ideas because the attainment of power is of paramount interest.
The three Ps should guide Jamaica and represent Peace, Prosperity and Progress. The Prime Ministry exhorted us to choose Jamaica. Nice sounding words, but the PM knows that some will be pulling left, some right, and some from behind, but he must hold on to those who will be willing to pull Jamaica forward.
The longest liver will see the most. Bark Di Trute will continue to Bark Di Trute, especially against those who will hold us back. No one benefits from holding back Jamaica.
It was a good ceremony and the various events moved along smoothly. You can always rely on the military band for excellent music. The Jamaica Constabulary Force has a great band and some outstanding performers. They could be included in future events like this.
