Should Civil Servants Participate in Party Politics?

It is in the news again about whether or not civil servants should be actively involved in party politics. Some people are not sure as to who is a public servant and who is a civil servant. Listen to this interesting discussion between Vernon Derby and O'Neil Grant and get a better understanding of the issue.

Share this blog with your children, especially if they did do civics while they were at school.

  1. Civil servants have a public relations to the people not to political affiliation
They should stick to being natural and keep their opinions private

  2. Politics is the process and.art art of making decisions for a society, organization, society or group.
It involves power dynamics, conflict resolution, resource allocation, and representation.

Politics plays a crucial role in shaping the direction of communities, nations, and institutions, and its study helps us understand the complex interactions between individuals, groups, countries and institutions.

It is therefore beyond me to understand why would someone be interdicted for exercising his/her constitutional rights by participating as a candidate in national elections.
The more functional and literate citizens should not be discouraged by interdiction from political participation of the highest levels as partnof their embedded constitutional rights.
How can a myriad of group rules supercede the constitutional laws.
That would be absolute chaos and political madness.
Argument done if not Privy Council here we come.

  3. As a public servant myself I have bo trouble seeing how running for political office while working for the government would be inappropriate and potentially problematic. One is in a position both to oppose the policies of the government while working within the government? One could even make pronouncements on a political platform, for political purposes, that are given credence specifically because of one's position in the dept/organisation. There can even be concern for sabotage when government policies are go be effected The list goes on. In the private sector one cannot promote a competing brand publicly while working for a certain company or convey trade secrets to the competing brand.
