People are generally misguided, as 'GOVERNMENT' does not have the power they ascribe to it. More than half of the things people expect the government to do, they have no such power. The real power lay in the hands of that 2% owning 95% of the economy. They have real political power.
The government needs to work closely with the economically powerful to achieve anything impactful or beneficial to all Jamaicans. Thus far, Governments are like destructive parasitic hosts on the Jamaican people who have bought into the illusion.
Why do you think democratic socialism couldn't achieve anything except laziness? This is due mainly to the fact that it was a confusing, illusive, lyrical, feel-good dream that made the country poorer.
Its proponent and party were neither socialists nor real democrats; they were like feel-good socialist dancehall deejays. Perhaps closet capitalists, as revealed today.
Where are our socialists today, now that socialism is dead and buried? All joined the capitalist train.
Look at Cuba: suffering compounded by blockades and sanctions from USA.
China: socialist in name, capitalist in practice.
Venezuela: pure suffering fuelled by sanctions and blockades.
Now that USA wants to reclaim their nationalized EXXON MOBIL investments under Chavez and now under Maduro.
China and Russia now seek to assist in maintaining stability with a less bullying type of capitalist, mainly infrastructural, developmental strategy.
Now Jamaica needs to aggressively embark on a closely supervised/participatory bottom-up capitalist development backed by a People's Incentives Act modeled off Jamaica's Hotel Incentives Act.
Main features are:
No or minimal duties and no direct taxation.
Jamaica with a highly informal capitalist environment, should abolish direct Income taxes. Rely on indirect taxation such as the efficient general consumption tax (GCT).That would rapidly free up productive capital, driving a more inclusive and fearless trajectory with upward socioeconomic development.
Also, by eliminating squatting, crime and murders would go down to single digits like we had at Independence in 1962, when there were 63 murders.
Go for it Jamaica and although there are "Many Rivers to Cross," long live Jimmy Cliff, long live Jamaica "We can Cross It".
