There is a national pothole crisis in Jamaica that requires national attention and solutions. The NWA, which I call the National Wutless Agency, is incapable ot maintaining our roads properly. The little potholes, which develop to become massive sinkholes, are too small for this corporate entity, NWA, to handle.
When mi was a bwoy, we had the PWD, the Public Works Department. Individuals were assigned by the PWD to fixed specific roads. If those roads were not fixed, then you know who should be held accountable.
If someone were to carry out a poll to ascertain how many motorists' vehicles have been damaged by potholes and the cost to those motorists, the findings would be mind-boggling.
Please answer the questionnaire below. I will send the results to the Prime Minister. It will be interesting to see how many people care.

It appears that Jamaica is in crisis!! Out West is in crisis, JPS & NWC is in crisis, societal crisis, road death crisis, government corruption crisis, clean city/country crisis, housing or lack thereof crisis, health facilities crisis, crime crisis, customer service or lack thereof crisis, garbage disposal crisis, pot hole/road repair crisis. The list goes on! In Jamaica, we live in a pressure cooker, we need a competent governance, a disciplined society and Divine Intervention.
ReplyDeleteOh yes the LENGTHMAN SYSTEM (LS)needs to be studied and re implemented as part of a decentralized road maintainance system.
ReplyDeleteHow it worked is that there were persons having designated daily responsibilities as employers of the then public Works Department(PWD) .
They saw to it that particular lengths/distances of roads were free of potholes, culverts cleaned, drains and sidewalks cleared.
Politicians were not responsible for issuing, doing or supervising road work.
Once that started corruption deepened Potholes "bruk out" islandwide, roads, softed out with marl and all hell bruk loose on motorists and vehicles.
Under the LS different grades and sizes of stones and gravel backed up by asphalt then compressed by a heavy duty driven roller following behind.
Anyone who grew up in the Bethel Town councilor division in Westmoreland could remember Mr Calder the roller driver.
As a child then i really thought he owned the roller.
Going on before was the horse drawn cart loaded with materials inclusive of stones, gravel and a drum with boiled asphalt out on the road in front with Walkfoot, Mr Jones and another person if think Missa Snipe.
These roads were perfect never saw a pothole after being fixed and the roller drive through after fixes.
and I never heard of Govament, politician,Kingston or Prime Minister called upon to fix our roads and they were perfect.
No Potholes in sight so Bring back the LENGTHMAN SYSTEM NOW.
This Melissa catastrophe has brought with it opportunities one of them is the decentralization of road maintainance islandwide.
Elders like a Pearnel Charles Snr or a Mike Henry I am sure could provide some guidance and or publish it.
