Professor of Sedimentary Geology at the University of the West Indies, Mona Campus, Simon Mitchell, just issued a statement about the earthquake which was felt this morning in Jamaica.

History Repeating Itself

I have been informed that on March 1, 1957, a powerful magnitude 6.2 earthquake struck western Jamaica, marking the strongest tremor felt on the island since 1907. The quake caused three deaths, severe damage to infrastructure—particularly in St. James and Hanover—and disrupted utilities. It famously damaged the St. James Parish Church tower
