Breaking News - JSPCA Closed?

I just obtained information that the staff members were locked out of the Jamaica Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals home this morning. This is located on 10 Winchester Road. I understand that the staff members were eventually allowed in.

This place is needed by the government, and I understand that a place was made available to the JSPCA at Hope Gardens. The organization was unable to meet the JAD 200 million cost of preparing the place at Hope Gardens for the five hundred animals. A source informed me that the Hope Gardens land is no longer available.

Whatever we do, we need to take care of our animals, and I hope that the state and the charitable organization can find a way to resolve this matter.

Bark Di Trute would love to hear from the managing director of JSPCA, Pamela Lawson.

I would love for them to remove the words 'Prevention of Cruelty' from the organization's name. The new name could be the Jamaica Society for Animal Care.

  1. Yes, love that new name you gave them but why do you want “prevention of cruelty” to be removed?

    1. A positive name could have a major positive impact.

    2. It is sad that an organization like the JSPCA is struggling to find a place to relocate. This is the only affordable place for a lot of persons to take their pets. It does not surprise me however that finding a location for them is not priority, as finding a place for persons who lost their homes after the hurricane is not priority either. Think on that.

I like the suggestion for a new name. Blessings

  2. This is unfortunate, but it says volumes about the society. Let's hope they will get some assistance soon and will find a longterm home. This issue has been in the public for a while now. Lack of awareness is not the problem– it's lack of care. The current name is perfect. It reflects their purpose and function. Save animals from human cruelty and providing them with a home. Why change it?

  3. I could agree with a name amendment : Jamaica Society for the Care and Prevention of Cruelty To Animals.
Although one could argue that by preventing cruelty they are caring.
I wonder why the staff faced the embarrassment of being locked out? How would the animals be cared for if they weren't let in?
    It looks untidy and heartless.
I wonder if the Government thinks it has ' better use' for that prime spot?
As a nation, let's look carefully at how we treat our animals. We already don't do as well as we could with our elderly, children and other vulnerable groups.
We need a place like this as I don't know of any private vet who offers these varied services and at an affordable cost.
This "need" for the property, whose interest is being served here?
Is it deemed an afront to the aesthetics?
Are they in breach of any Public Health regulation?
Which Ministry does it fall under - if any?
Yes, I'd love to hear from the head JSPCA, the staff and a Government representative.
Wish I could hear from the animals too 🙂

  4. I already stated one reason for the name change and there are others. Cruelty in the name does not evoke a positive response.. it gives the impression that the society is cruel to animals therefore there is need for the society. You want a name that the private sector would find attractive and would want to associate with. It should be all about animal care which imply that we should not be cruel to animals. Animal care is more pleasing to the air. I see the promotion of animal care having a greater impact on the society.

    1. Show you care by giving donation for our animals, show you care by adopting an animal and show you care for animals which be your loving friend.

    2. There is a lot of cruelty to animals in Jamaica and it needs to be acknowledged and dealt with. There are several animal welfare type organisations. Only jspca has certain powers under law to intervene if an animal is being cruelly treated. A name change can be dealt with in the future the urgency now is to find a home and for that public support is needed.

    3. I am surprised that people don't understand what proper branding can do for an organization. The care of animals is something that even commercial organizations could use to enhance the image of their organization. Changing a name is not just about changing a name, but about building a brand that society will fall in love with. Very few people are aware of the entity and the work that it does. Build the brand, build the name, build the reputation, and you could end up building support for this important organization.

    4. Mr. Derby, it's a non-profit organization and the name is befitting. They don't need tasteful branding. It says what they do. They would be understating their purpose to make people more accepting of them. That's being fake. Animals, and dogs especially are treated very badly by the general public. It's just facts.
