Miss Violet Edwards
Ms Violet Edwards is madly in love with the country of her birth. She is 101 years old, but no one can stop her when she wants to book her airline ticket and head for Jamaica. She did exactly that recently.
While she was in Jamaica, she spoke with me on the phone, and she was excited to be here. She told me that she had some work to do on the house. I told her she needed to take it easy, but that was easier said than done.
Miss Vie's mind is sharp as a razor. She is very au fait with modern technology. Although her mind is still sharp, the old man called time is surely taking a toll on her body. One day I received a call from her son-in-law in Florida, Everett Smith, stating that Miss Vie became ill and they had to take her off the island by air ambulance. Her daughter Christine, who is a doctor in Florida and one of the few such specialists in the US, will do anything for her mother. Her mother sacrificed her future to enable her to become a doctor.
Miss Vie sacrificed everything for her daughter, and then she made history by achieving her associate degree at the young age of 96. She made history in the world. Miss Vie is among a handful of people worldwide who have achieved that. She is, I believe, the oldest Jamaican to achieve her degree at 96 years old. This was world news.
She is now back in the US after encountering that health challenge. Subsequently, I received the following message from one of her relatives, Roger Panton.
There have been lots of adverse comments about the state of the Jamaica Health Service. The staff, however, are not responsible for any lack of equipment or essential supplies in any hospital.
With that in mind, I'd like to take this opportunity to say a special "Thank You" to the staff of the Emergency Section of the Princess Margaret Hospital, St. Thomas, for their care of my 100-year-old cousin, Violet Edwards, during her stay there for a day and a half, starting 6 July 2026, until she was moved to Miami for emergency and special treatment the following day.
When we arrived, the booking-in was swift, and the clinical contact was immediate and treated with care and compassion. Thank you all.
