I am sure that you know that being sick in Jamaica can be very rough. I just got a report from an elderly Jamaican that he had to stay at the Spanish Town Hospital for three days. He had to sit on a chair. He was unable to have a bath. He sent me this story, and he reminded me of my days on stage in School's Out.
Morning Vernon. I am drawing an analogy to the situation at Spanish Town Hospital, School's Out playing at the Barn Theatre, which can only accommodate 200 patrons; 300 show up for each showing, Trevor Rhone tries to accommodate them. Then he gets the backlash of how them no get no seat, them have to be sticking to the next person's shoulder. That was my experience being there for three nights, dozing off while being seated. Experiencing for oneself makes a difference.
Actually, I believe the Barn Theatre could only accommodate 150 patrons.
The gentleman who sent me this report said that he saw a man who was stabbed by another, and therefore the medical practitioners had to leave him to deal with that emergency. He said the medical staff worked very hard.
He did not have money to take a taxi to go to the hospital. He called 119, and they were very helpful, although they had a challenge with vehicles. He offers thanks to the Bridgeport police, who offered assistance.
He says that there is a major space problem at the hospital, but the staff tried their best to accommodate the ill patients. He told me about one man whose foot was turning black, and they had to amputate the leg. He said the bathroom facilities were in a poor state.
Based on what he told me, it seemed that because he sat in an area for three days, he ended up with a circulation problem. He has to do a colonoscopy, which can cost you up to JAD150,000. That will be done at the hospital.

Let's hope that they complete the new hospital as soon as possible in Spanish Town. People suffering from their conditions should understand the limitations of resources, and they should not take out their frustration on the staff.
The rest of us need to take care of our health and reduce the level of violence and accidents on our roads so that we can reduce the pressure on the health sector. Remember that the cost of healthcare in the private sector is unaffordable for most Jamaicans.

I feel very badly what I'm reading.....however the person who sent you this was very culturally humorous with his comparison with the people overcrowding the Barn Theatre! Please congratulate him for his intelligent statement, including a piece of theatre history!!!
ReplyDeleteFoundation fren say...yes our hospitals are in a poor state, but our services and space are stretched thin because of poor Primary Health Care ( sugary drinks, rum, boom, weed , cigarette etc), accidents and crime. These factors gravely affect the delivery of Health care. A lit of people wait until health becomes an emergency and that can overwhelm the Emergency Room services. At the same time Jamaica needs to build more Health facilities.
ReplyDeleteThe UHWI charge people who should pay $400 with health insurance the full $3000 registration and when you reach the clinic the doctor leaves without seeing you.
ReplyDeleteThe parking fees are exorbitant, there are only 2 disabled places which are usually occupied by UHWI staff.
A report should be made to the board chair and the permanent secretary in the Ministry of Health and Wellness about this matter. Let me have a copy of the report.
DeleteMany things are wrong up at the UHWI, but the people of this country have accepted it. I first highlighted the car park when it was being constructed. I saw it as a means to put money in people's pockets, but the people did not pay attention.
