We never salute murderers, racist and fascist, but this one has a close association to football in Jamaica. William Henry Manning: British Indian Army officer and Governor of Jamaica March 1913 to May 1918, born 163 years ago today. As a military commander, Manning murdered thousands of freedom fighters and innocent civilians in Rhodesia, now Zimbabwe and Somaliland. The Manning Cup schoolboy competition in Jamaica is named in his honor. The mass murderer died in 1932, and I have long questioned the rationale of having such an important competition named in honor of someone who murdered so many of our ancestors.
I have done some checks online, and the information obtained is that the Manning Cup Schoolboy Football Competition was indeed named after Sir William Henry Manning. He served as governor of Jamaica from 1913 to 1918.
I have not been able to verify activities that were attributed to him while he served in Africa. Considering the time that he was serving, it was well known how these men from England functioned.
The question I would like to ask the organizers of the Manning Cup Schoolboy Football Competition is why we still have a football competition named in honour of one of our colonial masters.
We need some answers now. We want to get rid of everything colonial, so why are we holding on to this? This football competition is part of the colonial relic. We must change the name NOW!
Please share this post as much as possible because I would love to hear from the Ministry of Education, the organizers of the football competition, and our historians.

Maybe there should be a committee to research those long held institutions to ensure that those we ‘honour’ are historically sound and worthy of our respect. This could be a function of our National Library.
