A Talk With Vernon

I hope you had a good day today and that you did not allow any evil person to spoil your day. I feel compelled to say a few things about myself because I have received a few messages that tell me that people misunderstand why I write these blogs, especially about my health.

First, I started my own magazine while I was a student at Knox College during the 60s, while I was in 2nd Form. Thanks to the school administration, which trusted a little boy to use the office typewriter and their Gestetner machine (founded and invented by Hungarian-born British industrialist David Gestetner in 1879). My paper was called Knox News.

It was tedious producing a magazine like that with the various columns on a special type of paper called a stencil. I used a stylus to create simple graphics. I had to try my best not to make any mistakes. A mistake would mean using a liquid to paint over the error, and then you had to line up the stencil properly to type in the correction.

In my early days, I showed an interest in playing the piano and the organ. The hours spent practising kept me out of trouble. I also loved swimming, so in my spare time you would find me in the pool. I also enjoyed photography, and I was fascinated by watching the negative develop. The negative captured the picture taken with the camera. Printing those pictures on photographic paper was exciting when you saw your final output.

I mentioned all of this to say how occupied I was as a child doing creative things. I have only mentioned a few of my hobbies. These hobbies have helped me in life. For example, I have moved from producing a magazine for a few students to producing blogs and podcasts for the world. Young people these days are mainly exposed to the hobby of playing on the computer and their phones for hours.

The question is, why did I do these hobbies? Writing and maintaining a blog, especially when you are facing challenges, is therapeutic. It keeps my mind from thinking about evil and negative things. It gives me a chance to share my experiences with others. It keeps me in touch with people who follow me in Jamaica and other countries.

Young people who occupy their time doing their hobbies do not have time to get into trouble. Music, for example, does something to your personality. How many musicians have you heard of who are criminals?

This now brings me to my articles about my illness. Sharing what is happening to me will help others. Some youngsters might be inspired to join the medical profession. I am an open person, and you will be shocked to know that I have told the doctor that, if it is possible, I would like my operation to be recorded so others can see it and learn from it. We only have one doctor with the modern equipment in Jamaica doing this operation. We need more.

My articles about my health are about my experiences, which I have no problem sharing with others. It keeps the Bark Di Trute family informed and educated, and their support has been extremely important to my survival so far. The articles are about Vernon, the subject, but they are for my readers' benefit.

All the best.

Hi Mr. Derby, thank you for your support with getting NHT to address my concerns. External work was completed yesterday, and we are truly grateful. I will send an email re: internal work to Mr. Christie.

Continue to rest and recover well.
