JLP Welcomes Injunction To Prevent Appointment of New Mayor in Clarendon

Press Release From the JLP - October 16, 2026

The Jamaica Labour Party takes note of and welcomes the decision of the Supreme Court to temporarily restrain the Clarendon Municipal Corporation from proceeding with a no-confidence vote against Mayor of May Pen, Joel Williams, and his Deputy, Clive Mundle.

The no-confidence vote was one of five agenda items set to be undertaken at a special Council meeting scheduled for today, Friday.

The Court order follows an application brought by Mayor Williams and Mundle.

Jamaica Labour Party Deputy General Secretary Dr. Andrew Wheatley says the Party supports the application filed by Mayor Williams and Deputy Mayor Mundle and that the rule of law should be allowed to take its course.

Dr. Wheatley says:

“We welcome the decision of the Court. We have been advised by astute counsel that there are aspects of the law which require clarity and that the application for an injunction therefore has a sound foundation. We look forward to a further determination of the Court. In the meantime, we are confident that Mayor Williams and Deputy Mayor Mundle are fully focused on dealing with the business of the people of Clarendon, whose will, expressed via the ballot, paved the way for their colleagues to allow them to assume the offices of Mayor and Deputy Mayor.”

According to the Court, the Corporation, its councillors, CEO, officers and agents are prohibited from considering, debating, voting on or determining certain items outlined in a meeting notice dated October 12.

The particular items were the no-confidence votes against Williams and Mundle, the election of the Deputy Mayor to fill any vacancy and the election of a Mayor.

The restriction also applies to any adjourned, reconvened or subsequent meeting of the Council.

The injunction will remain in force until November 13, when another hearing will take place.

The injunction temporarily prevents the Corporation from replacing the Mayor and Deputy Mayor.

Editor's Note

The position of Mayor should not be allowed to change unless there are new elections. The councillor moving to join the next party should first resign and allow the people to decide.

A councillor or an MP switching party affiliation without an election in the constituency or the division is forcing the electorate to support a party that the majority of the voters of that constituency/division did not support at the last election. It's a betrayal of the democratic decision taken at the last election.
