Magnitude 7.7 Earthquake Rocks Panama On October 9, 2026

A magnitude 7.7 earthquake rocked Panama on Friday, October 9, causing panic, especially in the high-rise buildings. The shallow tremor was felt across the Central American nation of around 4.5 million people, according to the National Civil Protection System, and lasted for around a minute.

Le Monde newspaper reports that President Jose Raul Mulino said, "We are facing a major disaster," He adding that some roads had "completely collapsed." The US Geological Survey said the quake struck at 1756 GMT with an epicentre 10 kilometres (6 miles) from the small town of Pitaloza Arriba in the south-central part of Panama.

The Channel was not affected by the quake.

Earthquakes are rare in Panama and usually occur in the western Chiriqui province, bordering Costa Rica. Images shared by local media showed that part of a hotel had collapsed in the town of Penonome, 150 kilometers southwest of Panama City.

Over 80 aftershocks, one above magnitude 6.0, were recorded by the local geosciences institute.
