Taking Funds From NHT!

People have been spreading misleading information about the withdrawal of NHT funds to support the national budget.

There has been no report of NHT funds being stolen. It is being used to support the national budget. Why is this so? For many years, the financial affairs of Jamaica have not been effectively managed. The crime rate has been one of the highest in the world, and that has had a negative impact on the economic life of the country.

Remember that FINSAC has devastated the business sector. We have just been increasing taxation over the years to cover the expenses of government. You should notice that we are unable to maintain our hospitals, our schools, and our roads, for example. We are also unable to pay our teachers and members of the medical profession properly.

The kitty is very low. Exports are low, and imports are high. All of this spells major economic challenges for our country.

The only choice we have now is to raid the NHT cupboard. This reminds me of a man who was saving for his house. He started to waste his resources until he had no money to buy food and pay his medical expenses. His only hope was to use his savings for a house. The only other option was to borrow money from the bank. For the country, it would mean going back to the IMF and other lending agencies. When you start to borrow money for your recurrent expenditures, then you know that is the end of the end.

How do we get out of this? We need to create an environment where people will feel confident to start businesses. That means reducing the business of crime and corruption significantly. Improving consumer confidence will improve purchases.

Producing and exporting more and improving consumer spending will mean more taxes will be flowing in the government coffers. At that time, there will be no need to raid the NHT funds. Those educated people spreading false information on the internet need to educate the people so that we can work together to build our country. Deliberate misinformation will make you a traitor, helping to destroy your country and its people. The challenge is that it is the poorest who will suffer most.
