Areas In My Parish, Trelawny Get Free WIFI

Marissa Dalrymple Philbert
presents table to Wait-A-Bit Primary School student, Leanna Lewis.

Lowe River and Ulster Spring in Trelawny are the latest communities to receive free Internet service under the Universal Service Fund (USF) Community Wi-Fi Programme.

The secured hotspots were officially launched in the two communities on Monday (October 10).

The initiative aims to increase access to the Internet across Jamaica’s 63 constituencies as part of the Government’s digital inclusion programme.

Mayor of Falmouth
Councillor Collen Gager

Speaking at the launch event in Lowe River, Mayor of Falmouth, Councillor Collen Gager, said he is pleased with the implementation of the service and implored the residents to use it wisely.

“My heart is filled with joy and gratitude. I pause to say thank you to the Government of Jamaica and the USF for this very important and timely initiative. You see, we are now going through unprecedented times [which] call upon our skills, our abilities to navigate our way through the course before us,” he noted.

Financial Controller at USF, Doranie Sergeant, who represented Chief Executive Officer, Daniel Dawes, encouraged children to use the Internet responsibly.

“You have to take it seriously; you have to protect your device; you have to use it productively. Yes, you may have times when you want to [partake] in some entertainment, but kids, use it to ensure that you become the next member of parliament, you become the next mayor. Use it to your advantage; remember it is of no cost to you. You need to protect it,” Mr. Sergeant said.

For her part, Speaker of the House of Representatives and Member of Parliament for Trelawny Southern, Marisa Dalrymple-Philibert, said that with access to the Internet, “[Everyone] has the opportunity to work, to learn, to get entertainment”.

“You can connect with your relatives abroad, and remember, it is for free,” she pointed out.

A total of 189 communities across Jamaica will benefit from free Wi-Fi service under the community Wi-Fi project.

Residents are expected to make use of the service to improve their computer literacy, access information for employment, education, entertainment, to do business, acquire valuable skills, among other things.

Opposition Leader Gives Update on Captured Lands in St. Catherine

Mr. Mark Golding
Opposition Leader of Jamaica

Please have a look at the video below sent out by the Leader of the Opposition, Mr. Mark Golding. I would like Opposition Leader Golding to respond to the following questions:

  • You refer to the people as residents of Clifton. Were all these people actually living in the unfinished structures and therefore can be referred to as residents?
  • Were homes demolished or partially constructed buildings?
  • Will the Opposition Leader be suing the person or persons who collected funds from these persons under the pretense that they were selling lands and homes?
  • What is the Opposition Leader's position on those who allegedly sold the land which did not belong to them?

Mr. Golding I would advise that you trod carefully less you send the wrong message to the people. You could be in government soon and you could face similar challenges created by those who feel that they are not shackled by the law!

The Most Hon. Juliet Holness To Give Opening Remarks at Inaugural Louise Bennett-Coverley Festival

The Most Hon. Juliet Holness

This coming Heroes Weekend,  Jamaicans are invited to pay tribute to a beloved cultural icon at the inaugural staging of the Louise Bennett-Coverley Festival on Saturday, October 15, in the Miss Lou Square, Gordon Town, from 10:00 am- 4:00 p.m., under the theme "Fi wi lanwij, fi wi kolcha."

The festival, organized by Professor Opal Palmer Adisa in collaboration with the Jamaica Cultural Development Commission, JCDC, will celebrate Ms Lou who, at ‘yaad’ or abroad, researched, excavated and promoted our Jamaican folk culture. Ms Lou

Prof. Opal Palmer Adisa

was proud of our Jamaican identity and as such forged ahead the excitement around the use of our Nation Language embodied in her work and theatrical performances. She nationalized the Pantomime and was the first to host a children’s show on TV designed to allow our children to learn about their culture and feel proud to be Jamaican. It is only fitting that she be honoured with the same vigour and pride with which she represented us so gallantly for many decades. A poet, folklorist, actress, comic, stage and media  personality, Louise Bennett was the first black person to attend the prestigious Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts in London, and the 2nd to host a show on the BBC.

This festival is specifically created for the citizens of Jamaica to gather in peace and unity to celebrate a cultural icon and educate ourselves about Miss Lou’s life and works. Patrons will enjoy all day music by the legendary Merritone Sound System and performances from Jamaica's stalwarts in poetry, story-telling and other artistic offerings. Storytelling by Amina Blackwood Meeks; poetry offerings by Cherry Natural, Fabian Thomas, Davia Ellis, Sean C. Harris, Courtney “Little Miss Lou” Greaves; school performances and songs from Tania Hernandez from Canada will set a cultural tone along with DANZIC Dance Troupe, a dramatic presentation by students of Edna Manley College for the Visual and Performing Arts and The LTM Pantomime Company.  A Special Children’s Zone with creative activities will keep the children entertained. Farmers and craft vendors from Gordon Town and adjoining communities will also showcase their products.

The Objectives of the festival are: to ensure that Louise Bennett’s work is taught and preserved at home and throughout the Diaspora; that students of all ages conduct research on and perform Louise Bennett’s work; to encourage Jamaicans to actively preserve our cultural heritage through language, storytelling and folklore; and to provide a creative space where the contributors of the Anthology, 100+ Voices for Ms Lou  can share their poetry, essays and other work and do paid performances on an ongoing basis.

Proceeds of the festival are in aid of scholarships and grants for Louise Bennett-Coverley Primary School, Edna Manley College of the Visual and Performing Arts - School of Drama and the non-profit organization Uncommon Arts

The festival will be  officially opened at 11 a.m. with remarks by Hon. Juliet Holness, MP and the Ministry of Culture, Gender,Entertanment and Sport.

Tickets for entry are Adults $2000 and Residents of Gordon Town and Children $500.

Ring-Ding! Clap Yu Self and join us to celebrate Miss Lou, a true Jamaican hero on Heroes Weekend!!

Land Capturing Cannot be a Part of a Modern Society!

PM Andrew Holness

I have been critical of the Prime Minister in the past but this time the action of his government in dealing with the illegal buildings in St. Catherine  is dead on when it comes to the action taken in demolishing the houses built. I must commend the role played by MP Fitz Jackson. His role it seems to me was to see if there was any injustice and not just to
MP Fitz Jackson

object for objection sake to increase his political stocks. I noticed a level improved maturity when both he and the Prime Minister was on hand to address the situation.

Lawlessness is not a PNP nor a JLP thing, but a problem for us all as a developing nation. There are some very dumb persons who have been putting up posts on social media just to get likes and who seem to be supporting the capturing of lands. Some went on to say that the Prime Minister talked about criminals selling land and there were no criminals involved. Well anyone who sell lands that they are unauthorized to sell is a criminal.

I have spent many years on radio encouraging person not to capture lands and explaining the dangers of doing so. We need to know if those who were bawling how they lost money, had they submitted building plans to the parish council? Did the parish council approve these plans? Many persons on social media love to use the sympathy argument to stir up discontent in the country. One cannot do something which is illegal and claim that it is because they are poor that's why they did it. I am glad that Mr. Fitz Jackson did not follow another politician who seems to love to blow hot air from the wrong place.

Government has to come up with a plan to facilitate the legal ownership of land and houses. The NHT should look at the possibility of renting homes to persons also. We cannot solve the housing problem by engaging in lawless practices. We have places like Russia, Wareika Hills, Mona Commons, Flanker as examples of unplanned settlements. There are certain social challenges which follow when you have unplanned settlements.

Mr. Prime Minister you need to continue to be firm with indiscipline and lawlessness in the country. Those who are creating the impression that the PM back peddled by meeting with the people are being ridiculous and are not familiar with smart politics. The government did something which upset members of the community. Nothing is wrong with the PM meeting the people and explaining to them why action was taken. It was great for Mr. Jackson to have gone there also because Mr. Jackson's party could form the next government and be shackled with the same problem.

The law encourages the capturing of lands by allowing adverse position if one capture's a citizens land and lives on it for twelve years but yet for government or crown lands it is sixty years before they can apply to the courts for adverse possession. Morale seems to be it's fine to capture a citizens land but do not capture crown lands.

WHAT A TING!

Covid-19 Must GO! The Precautions Must Remain!

Covid-19 has wreaked havoc on the world. Can you imagine approximately 6.5 million persons died from this deadly virus!  I must admit that this deadly virus has also done some good. especially for Jamaica. The environment has breathed a sigh of relief with the slowing down of certain activities. Think of it, I have not had any cold nor flu in about three years. Could that be a result of changes in our behaviour which has limited the transfer of  these viruses?

Prior to Covid-19, when we parked our motor vehicles at the supermarkets, they use to give us plastic cards in exchange. If you lost that card you had to pay for it. Since Covid-19, we seem to have forgotten about that card. If your car is stolen in the car park, could you take the card to management and they replace the card with your car? That practice has stopped since Covid-19.

Since Covid-19 we have learnt that we can work from home. For over a year, I broadcast my radio show from home and many listeners did not even realize it. Companies are now making use of VPN (Virtual Private Network). With VPN workers can stay at home and work on their computer as if they are at the office. Persons can also stay at home and answer the office telephone extension. The greatest discovery was that one can stay almost any where and join a meeting using ZOOM or other software. The country must have saved a lot on transportation costs during Covid-19. Can you imagine travelling from Montego Bay to have a meeting in Kingston or travelling from Old Harbour to attend a class at the university to hear a lecturer giving the same lecture which he has given for the past ten years?

Because many persons now work from home, we now understand the philosophy of working by objectives rather than working by the clock. When you work by the clock you work by the hour. You clock in on time and you clock out on time.  When you work by objectives and an objective has not been achieved then the work has not been completed.

Covid-19 has taught us to join a line and yet not be glued on to the person in front of you like Siamese twins. Persons went to bed earlier and of course there was less night noise because the 24 hour music boxes were silenced.

Covid-19 has taught us to once again cover our mouths when we cough.

Covid-19 has taught us to remember to wash our hands. Something we use to do before and after we eat and after we go to the bathroom. Nowadays some of us go to the bathroom and just wipe our hands in our clothes.

We also are assured that those who serve  our food at the restaurants do not spray a puff of water vapour each time they utter a word because the masks prevent that.

Finally when we wear masks, it is easier to stare and admire others without those persons realizing. Oh yes we need to see the back of Covid-19 but since Covid-19 we have had to abandon some of our madern practices and go back to some of those old time practices. As wicked as Covid-19 has been to us, Covid-19 has done a lot of good for us. I am dying to see the back of Covid-19, but thanks for those good hygiene practices which were put in place because of Covid-19. Don't think that I am strange if you see me wearing my mask long after Covid-19 has departed and I still ask you to keep your distance from me when I am in the supermarket line for example.

I know a man who lives with his two dogs and he eats, drinks and sleeps with his mask on even although no one else has ever been seen in the house. One thing for sure, those dogs will never catch Covid-19 from him.
