What's Happening In Our Schools, Mona High, St. James High, Hopewell High and Others?

Dr Dana Morris Dixon, Ministry of Education, Skills, Youth and Information

The Ministry of Education Skills Youth and Information should tell us what is happening at Mona High, Hopewell High, St. James High Schools, and other schools. How much education is taking place at some of these schools?

Joseph Williams
Principal
St. James High

A source told me that the St. James High School board hardly ever meets. This school had a poor reputation, but I understand that the students have settled down under the leadership of Joseph Williams, the principal. The students' performances have improved dramatically. Violence in the school has been eliminated

Is there a power struggle between the board chairman, some board members, and the principal? This matter has been going on for too long, and the Ministry must resolve it now. The easiest thing to do is to appoint a new board. I was told that Mr. Williams has his faults, but he has performed well as principal. It will be difficult to find a replacement. He has the support of some board members.

Kevin Jones
Principal of
Mona High

The fight at Mona High continues. The former chairman of the board, Winsome Halliman, resigned earlier this year. Kevin Jones is the principal. I learnt that the vice principal has been demoted after serving in that post for 10 years. Something is wrong at Mona High. Can we fix it? An informant told me that the vice principal now sits in the library.

There have been questions about how funds have been spent and also how members of the board are selected.

Bryan Grant -
Principal of
Hopewell Secondary

Hopewell High was in the news last year. They killed the bursar, Jermaine Roberts. The principal was on a long leave, and when he returned, I read in the newspaper that some teachers stayed away from the classroom when the principal resumed his position.

I saw a video showing some boys mercilessly beating a boy. The boy cried out in pain and cried like a baby while they delivered slaps to the face in the region of his ears. He eventually fell to the ground writhing in pain. The boys continued the onslaught without any feelings of pity. They delivered multiple kicks to his back and other parts of his body. These boys attend Hopewell High School. These boys should not be in a school. They are young criminals and should be treated as adults for their crimes. A few strikes from the cat-o-nine are needed to teach those boys a lifelong lesson.

The Senate, on Friday, approved amendments to the Maintenance Act to provide for a maintenance order to be granted by the court after a child attains the age of 18 years. This aspect of the act applies to children who are attending an educational institution. This section of the act I believe is a waste of time. Will these young adults seek permission from their parents when they want to have sex and have children?

Will we have a law to ensure that parents maintain a sick adult child? I guess education is more important than health. Many of these lazy young people cannot help their parents plant a grain of corn. Their parents are being called upon to fund their education when they become adults.

Let's look at another matter relating to the education sector. How often schools have external audits? We talk about spending money on education, high supplementary fees and fundraising activities, but they still need funds. I put it to the Minister that the school system is probably one of the biggest financial sinkholes in Jamaica.

I am also getting reports that students now turn up at classes anytime they want to and disrupt classes. Principals are being told to allow them notwithstanding their time of arrival. We need a law to prosecute parents whose children do not attend school or attend on time. These students should be removed from these normal schools and placed into special institutions specially built for them. This is where they young criminals should go also.

Finally, I would like to know what percentage of all students leaving at grade 11, have attained the grade 11 standard of education. That could be a shocking bit of information. I would also like to know what percentage of students who enter at the secondary level are competent at the grade six level.

Yes, we need more regulations and more effective management of the educational system, not more laws compelling parents to maintain adults. It is these adult children who should be taking care of their parents.

Shocking News! NEPA Needs to Call In NSWMA

I have not been able to follow up on the NEPA vs. Trade Wind saga. I cannot understand, but from the little that I know, how can NEPA the environmental agency, take an organization to court about environmental matters and drop the case like that? No man...a mussi dream mi bena dream. This plot would make an excellent movie.

This morning, Saturday, November 30, 2024, I read the following from the Gleaner:

I checked the NEPA website at https://www.nepa.gov.jm/, for the documents and I saw this link:

When I clicked on the link above, it took me to this site:

Were the documents removed from the web site? Who gave those directives to remove the documents? No man something is not right. Can someone tell me that I am clicking on the wrong link and that the documents are still on the site?

Pollutants seem to be all over NEPA. They need to call in NSWMA to clean up things! The Integrity Commission can get work at last at NEPA!

NEPA just dropped the case between them and Trade Winds! The courts time has been wasted! Anything can go so! Can the court charge a defendant or a plaintiff in a case for wasting the court's time? The court should be able to claim about JAD20,000,000 for damages. If there is no such law, we need to enact that law now.

This cartoon in the Gleaner about the NEPA vs Trade Winds is classic. LasMay is very creative.

Animals To Help Children Get Well - Animals?

Press Release From The Ministry of Health and Wellness - 20241129:

KINGSTON, Jamaica. Friday, November 29, 2024: The Bustamante Hospital for Children is adding to its suite of services, with its Animal-Assisted Recovery and Care Programme (AARCP) and a combined spiritual and psychological support initiative while continuing to provide comprehensive medical care to children 12 years old and younger.

Now more than 12 months since the launch of the AARCP, 142 patients have benefited from animal therapy, which seeks to complement healthcare delivery to patients undergoing procedures or who require long-term hospitalisation.

Under the programme, there have been monthly interactions and educational sessions involving pre-selected patients and the animals. Staff and parents also benefit from the visits and interactions with animals.

Speaking at a visit to the health facility on Thursday (November 28, 2024), Minister of Health & Wellness, Dr. the Hon. Christopher Tufton, MP saluted the staff for their work in introducing the other dimensions of wellness.

“I commend the team on embracing the concept of wellness and the one-health approach, which is reflected in the adoption of the Animal-Assisted Recovery and Care programme. At the same time, we understand that our mental health and wellness is not divorced from our physical health, and we want to give our children the best chance at optimal recovery,” he said.

Additionally, during his visit, Dr. Tufton handed over a Wellness Bench to the facility, noting the donation of was being made as part of the ongoing Do Your Share Mental Wellness Campaign and its Wellness Check-In feature which has important synergies with the AARCP.

The hospital has also recently renovated its Chapel through $1.5M support from the Sandals Foundation. The space is a multipurpose area that facilities the function of social work, including counselling and private meetings with parents, as well as a prayer/meditation facility for staff members and patients alike.

Press Release from the Meteorological Office - 20241129 1800 EST

The Meteorological Service has:

Downgraded the Flash Flood Warning to a Flash Flood Watch for low-lying and flood-prone areas of St. Mary, Portland, St. Thomas, St. Andrew, Kingston, St. Catherine and Clarendon, effective until 5:00 p.m. on Saturday, November 30, 2024.

Discontinued the Flash Flood Watch for low-lying and flood-prone areas of all other parishes effective immediately.

The broad Trough across the western Caribbean continues to produce a large area of disorganized showers and thunderstorms across the region including Jamaica. Rainfall data indicate that light to moderate and occasionally heavy showers and thunderstorms have been affecting mainly sections eastern and south-central parishes, throughout today.

The forecast is for periods of light to moderate showers and thunderstorms to continue mainly across eastern and south-central parishes through to Saturday morning.

Consequently, due to the extensive rainfall over the past few days, there remains the possibility for flash flooding to occur even during periods of light to moderate showers.

Fisher and other marine interests, especially those operating across southern offshore marine zones, are urged to exercise extreme caution as sea conditions will continue to deteriorate in the vicinity of showers, thunderstorms and strong winds.

A FLASH FLOOD WARNING means flooding has been reported or will occur shortly.

Motorists and pedestrians should not attempt to cross flooded roadways or other low-lying areas as strong currents are likely. Residents in low-lying areas should be on the alert for rising waters and be ready to move quickly to higher ground.

A FLASH FLOOD WATCH means that flash flooding is possible, and residents are advised to take precautionary measures, keep informed by listening to further releases from the Meteorological Service and be ready for quick action if flooding is observed or if a Warning is issued.
