Veteran Journalist Leslie Miles is Dead!

Leslie Miles

Leslie Washington Miles, a renowned journalist from the decade of the seventies to the early 2000s, sadly made his departure yesterday, February 11, 2025. Mr Miles is best known as one of the founders of the Jamaica Record newspaper, which became defunct in a competitive and hostile media landscape.

Leslie was an avid, reliable, and professional journalist who wrote on current affairs, sports, and entertainment. He worked in the JBC newsroom, KLAS radio, and BEST FM radio.

He highlighted the careers of many talented artists, actors, and musicians throughout that period. Leslie was a close friend of Rita Marley, among other internationally known performers. On that tragic night when Bob Marley and others were shot in Kingston, he was on assignment and sitting beside Rita in her Volkswagen motor car. He was the first to publish an article about Sly & Robbie and other internationally known Jamaican artists.

He also worked closely with the JCDC as coordinator for their song competition and as a judge for the Tastee Talent Competition.

Jamaica has lost a creative genius. As we mourn the loss of another son of the soil, we remember him as one who promoted entertainers and the entertainment business.

Jubilee Market Re-Opened as Jubilee Commercial Centre

Press Release From the KSAC of the Mayor's Statement - 20250212:

KSAMC's Mayor Andrew Swaby and Town Clerk Robert Hill

I am proud to announce the re-opening of what was formerly known as Jubilee Market, now renamed the Jubilee Commercial Centre. This project has been years in the making. It began under former Mayor Dr. Angela Brown Burke, continued under former Mayor Delroy Williams, and I am honoured to have seen it through to completion.

This redevelopment means that the streets of Downtown Kingston will now be easier to traverse, as 40 vendors have been relocated into the newly opened facility. This is more than just a market—it is a place of commerce, where our vendors can operate with dignity, stability, and security.

False Information about the New Social Housing Programme (NSHP)

Press Release From The Office of the Prime Minister - 20250211

Prime Minister Andrew Holness

Prime Minister Dr. the Most Honourable Andrew Holness is calling on Jamaicans to verify information before accepting misleading social media content as truth.

The Prime Minister’s comments came in response to a malicious post falsely alleging that homes distributed under the New Social Housing Programme (NSHP) were being reclaimed by the government.

Prime Minister Holness has strongly condemned the post, emphasizing that it is part of a deliberate attempt to undermine a successful initiative designed to provide housing solutions for Jamaica’s most vulnerable citizens.

The Prime Minister stated: “I do see where there is a deliberate attempt to target a programme and to target the government. And I say to all well-thinking Jamaicans, I say to all our supporters, do not allow the evil people to win the battle for the minds. Think very carefully on what is presented to you. Don't just take and accept without consideration what is presented in a fancy and glossy social media post. Ninety percent of them are lies. Check before you believe.”

Dr. Holness said the government remains committed to delivering social housing through a structured, transparent, and effective approach. The Prime Minister drew a clear distinction between the current programme and that of the previous administration, Operation PRIDE, a previous low-income housing programme that resulted in unfinished lots, missing documentation, and communities left without basic infrastructure such as roads and water supply.

“This [NSHP] is not that programme. And I will not allow those persons to use false information to undermine a good programme so that they can get the political power to come and do what they did with programmes such as Operation PRIDE,” Prime Minister Holness affirmed.

The government continues to expand the NSHP, ensuring that housing solutions reach those most in need while maintaining accountability and fiscal responsibility. The Prime Minister reassured Jamaicans that his administration will not be deterred by political sabotage and remains focused on improving the lives of all citizens.
