Scotia Bank Rude Customer Service Agent

The high-tech, and I am sure very educated, crooks got hold of my credit card number, and they had a field day. They were able to do that because not enough has been done to make using debit and credit cards secure.

Many of you will recall that while I was on the radio doing At Your Service, I requested that banks advise customers by email when there is a change on their account. Some banks are now doing that, and I was told that NCB has joined Scotia in sending email messages to their customers when there is a transaction on the customer's account.

One night, while checking my emails, I noticed that I was getting messages about expenditures using my credit card. I contacted the bank immediately. I was happy that I heard a Jamaican voice answering the phone, but by the end of the conversation, I regretted the encounter with this Jamaican agent. The problem I had with the calls being answered by these overseas agents is that I have a difficulty understanding their accent. The foreign-sounding agents display excellent customer service when compared to their Jamaican-sounding counterparts.

While talking to this agent on March 5, 2025, between 1:30 am and 1:45 am, and expressing my concerns about the system, I felt she was getting impatient with me. She interrupted me a few times, and at one point I had to say to her, "Why not shut up and listen to me?"

The agent told me that she was not paid to have people disrespect her.  She promptly hung up the phone on me.

I had to call back, and I got a gentleman whose name is Akeem Elliot. I told him about the behaviour of his colleague and he apologized.

The bank arranged for me to get a new credit card, and I was advised to go to the ABM and check on the balance using the new credit card. This would activate the card. I did that, and I subsequently went to the pharmacy to use the card, and the card was declined. I called the Scotia Credit Card people, and I was sent to the ABM to activate the credit card again. I logged in to the ABM using the credit, got my balance, and then attempted to change the PIN. It asked me to put in my old PIN. I put in my new PIN twice. The machine responded with a message asking me to visit my nearest branch.

I have not had the use of my credit card for two weeks. Doing business with the bank can be a pain in the bottom.

Scotia Bank got an award for World’s Best Consumer Digital Bank 2024 from  Global Finance (New York). I wonder if there were any Jamaican consumers on the judging panel.

Tomorrow I will have to go back to the bank again. It has cost me about JAD5,000 for travel and the embarrassment of my card being declined in front of other customers is an unestimated cost. Note that the bank can debit my account with bank charges, but I cannot debit the bank with customer charges incurred.

Note:
There was a time when one had to stand in line at the bank for over an hour. Old people and pregnant people had to stand. I remember raising hell in Scotia Centre about the matter. Things have improved. Customers no longer stand for an hour or more; they sit. Chairs are provided so you can sit for an hour or more.

Expect further improvements; they might provide beds in the future so we can sleep for an hour or more. The technology is certainly improving things!

Goshen Post Office Crying Out For Repairs In The Interest of The Citizens

The following is a message from a supporter in St. Elizabeth:

Pictures of the Goshen Post Office.

Donovan Pagon
Good morning Mr Derby,  these are pictures of the Postal Agency in Goshen, St. Elizabeth that was badly damaged by hurricane Beryl. The roof was blown off so the building is inoperable. RADA also has an office on this building yet we are unable to get assistance to repair the building from those in authority.

I understand that it is said the citizens can take their mail in Santa Cruz or Pepper PO which is miles away.  My concern is, are those in authority expecting the elderly, the disabled, the students in the area to take a taxi to travel miles away to access their mail? Does this mean that the farmers must now travel to Santa Cruz to do their business!

Mr Vernon I am requesting that you share this info on your platform and help us appeal to the MP and all those in authority to assist in the renovation process to completion so normalcy can be restored; we cannot deny our senior citizens, students and the less fortunate this service; it is inhumane, inconsiderate and unconscionable!

A few of the citizens, a very small percentage, have been contributing to the restoration of the building, we need help!! Oh I understand the building is owned by the Parish Council! We need help and it is needed now!!  The roof was blown off but the citizen decided to give it a concrete roof, hence the work you see in this picture!!!!

MP is Delroy Slowley, Councillor is Donovan Pagon, and the building is owned by the Parish Council, I appreciate your quick response.

Editor's note:

This citizen is not asking for much. Councillor Donovan Pagon, can you update me on this matter?

Traffic Ticketing Oppression

It is as clear as day that the traffic ticketing system is BACK-DOOR/SIDE-DOOR TAXATION.

No problem with traffic tickets, but they are much too expensive.

This encourages corruption and bitterness in the system. It seems as though all we have these days are mainly TIK TOC TIC KETTING POLICE.

A man in a taxi said with driving emphasis, he hated the Prime Minister Andrew Holness. He was going to make sure he registers to vote .

I asked, "why you hate the yute and he allowed you to have and own cars to make a living?"

He answered, "yes, but with these expensive tickets, he seems to be planning to take them back".

Quite honestly, I was bowled over by that response, totally unexpected.

With all these backdoor and side door taxation measures.

Time come to abolish Direct Income tax, save the country and the JLP government's political skin in the game.

Breaking News - Pat Reid is No Longer With Us

Pat Reid

Pat Reid has passed on. A selfless person who dedicated her life to supporting many of our political leaders. She also worked in the Office of the Prime Minister.

Our JCDC Festival queens will remember those hours they spent with their chaperone Pat. I thank her for her support as a member of the JCDC Festival Song Committee while I was chairman. She was a commissioner at the JCDC. Pat was active in the Jaycees movement and was the president of a chapter.

Pat was never in the spotlight, but she made things and people in the spotlight look big.

Sleep on my friend.

Green Acres Citizens Are Standing Up For The Environment and Their Health

Today I spoke with the President of the Green Acres Citizens' Association, Vanessa White-Barrow, on the radio about the untenable situation regarding the cremation of human bodies close to them. They say that they cannot enjoy their meals at home. Residents with asthmatic challenges are facing serious health problems.

One resident reported the owners of one cemetery are working in the area, and the dust from the cemetery is making her life unbearable.

The matter has been brought to the attention of Mayor Scott and Minister Tufton, the MP for the area. Both men responded to me this morning. Minister Tufton will have the National Environment and Planning Agency (NEPA) investigate the matter, and councillor Alphonso Johnson will visit the area. The citizens are tired of talk, and they are now demanding action.

State agencies have a responsibility to ensure that the people of this country can live in peace in a secure environment where their safety and health are protected. Unhappy people cannot build a prosperous nation.
