I am making a special appeal to my fellow Jamaicans to support this beautiful lady who needs blood. All it takes is a caring spirit and your time to donate.

Her name is Lilieth Moncrieffe, and she lives in Bull Bay, St. Thomas.  She worked with Elias Zadie on Luke Lane for over 35 years selling material.  She left there and started a food shop business in the Plaza in Portmore.  Lilieth went to school in Trinityville, in St.  Thomas

Many of the sellers in the Coronation Market know her, and they call her Mummy. Lilieth is a patient at the KPH, and she needs blood now!

The Bite of The Week That I could not Swallow

How is it possible for a container to fall off a ship at sea and the authorities just let it wash ashore without ensuring that it was properly secured? This container could have been packed with guns, drugs, or any other illegal items. It was reported that the container was packed with chicken.

Who will be held accountable for this uncustomed meat coming into Jamaica? 

If we were at war with another country, the enemy wouldn’t need to fire a single shot. All they’d have to do is toss some contaminated chickens in containers into the ocean, and by the time the containers make it to shore, the battle would be over. Jamaica has changed a lot. I grew up in Trelawny, where I was socialized not to nyamy nyamy, or likkie likkie. I could never eat those chicken - no sah!

The story of the chickens goes from being absurd to frightening. People are caught on camera taking uncustomed goods, which are subsequently consumed. The culprits made headlines and appeared smiling on TV. The TV presenters were also laughing along as if it was a big joke. Probably, the news was a comedy show. Is crime a joke in Jamaica?

Life Certificate Requirements Killing Pensioners

Jamaicans who receive pension payments from the National Insurance Scheme and the Accountant General's Department have to submit life certificates periodically. This is to ensure that payments are being made to persons who are alive.

There have been complaints about this system of submitting these life certificates. Bark Di Trute wants you to give your impressions of the system and make suggestions to improve it.

Spotlight on Dr. Carol Althea McDaniel - Ardenne Alum

 

At age 15, she dreamed of becoming a psychiatrist, motivated by concern for the homeless and indigent on the streets of Kingston. She left Ardenne at 17 and had a checkered career of passing and failing courses until she eventually earned an Honours degree in Natural Sciences in 1989 from UWI. With strong support from her father, she completed a degree in Medicine. She moved closer to her dream by entering the UWI Psychiatry programme. Her interest in Forensic Psychiatry was influenced by family members in law enforcement while she worked and studied. This would allow her to work with mentally ill individuals who were offenders. She won a British Chevening Scholarship and enrolled in a Forensic Master's Programme at the University of Birmingham.

Carol accomplished what was nearly impossible by concurrently completing her doctoral degree in General Psychiatry (UWI) and a Master's in Forensic Mental Health (U of B) while working full-time in the UK. She returned to Jamaica in 2001 as the first formally trained Forensic Psychiatrist in the English-speaking Caribbean. She was appointed as a Consultant General and Forensic Psychiatrist at the University Hospital and the Correctional Services. In 2003, she migrated to the UK, where she became the first Black woman to be appointed as a Consultant Psychiatrist in Birmingham. In total, Carol has six degrees, two Bachelor's degrees, three Master's degrees, and a Doctorate. Carol is seen above discussing issues of common interest with a colleague.

Carol was particularly satisfied when working with Jamaican patients, who were often misunderstood. A white British psychiatrist thought that a Jamaican patient was delusional because she called him a piece of cloth. He continued to detain her in the hospital. Carol realized that the patient was mentally fit but angry, telling the doctor, "Yuh Ra@$ cl@@t!" The patient was discharged the same day. In 2008, she was flown to Jamaica to assess a mentally ill man on death row who had been convicted of murder. Her expert witness testimony in court raised awareness of insanity as a defense for homicide. The UK Privy Council later commuted his death sentence to life in prison. Carol, you are special and welcome to the Road to Ardenne 100.

I just heard that a mother beat her four-year-old child mercilessly, and somehow the child fell into a coal stove and suffered major burns to her body. Unconfirmed reports said this happened in Spanish Town. Readers, it is not easy to get information as to what is happening out there. If you have information about this matter, please WhatsApp me at 876-816-5261. 

This woman could end up having more children! She could have more dysfunctional children who will create havoc in society. With what is happening in Jamaica, it seems to me that some people need to have their rights taken away so that we have the right to live in a peaceful country.

Fire Again In The St. Andrew Hills

The fires have started early in the St. Andrew Hills, and the summer has not yet started. If you are living in the area, keep me abreast of what's happening there.

Explosion on Hope Road

Many motorists will have noticed the traffic pileup this afternoon at about 3:00 pm just above Lady Musgrave Avenue on Old Hope heading towards Liguanea. Do you have any information about that incident? It would help if the police informed the public immediately via radio that there is a traffic challenge so that announcements could be made on air advising motorists to avoid the area.

New School Bus System WIll Enhance Safety, Ease Financial Burden Says PM

KINGSTON, April 7 (JIS):

The Most Hon. Dr. Andrew Holness

Prime Minister, Dr. the Most Hon. Andrew Holness, says the introduction of a dedicated school bus system in the public transportation sector will ensure equitable access, improved attendance, and enhanced safety while easing the financial burden on families.

“I am happy that we are finally at a point where we can bring in buses that are dedicated to public transportation for students. When this is fully rolled out, Jamaica will have a comprehensive school bus system,” the Prime Minister said.

Dr. Holness was addressing journalists on Monday (April 7) at the Office of the Prime Minister (OPM), following a tour of one of the retrofitted units that will be utilised in the school bus system.

The Prime Minister noted that the buses will be outfitted with cameras and tracking capabilities to facilitate live location updates via an app.

 “It will be a proper and full school bus system run by the Government of Jamaica that all Jamaicans can be proud of,” Dr. Holness noted.

“Our administration, having secured economic stability and fiscal certainty is now increasing the pace at which we deliver these benefits to ease the pain points,” he added.

The new school bus system will be jointly operated by the Ministry of Education, Skills, Youth and Information and the Ministry of Science, Energy, Telecommunications and Transport.

It is set to launch in September 2025 and will offer rides for as little as $20 per trip.

Transport Minister, Hon. Daryl Vaz, said that 100 buses will be deployed across rural parishes, drastically reducing fares that currently range from $300 to $600 daily.

“We are going to have them on a cashless system so that there is no need for the student to use cash, and also to facilitate them with the concession that the Jamaica Urban Transit Company (JUTC) now gives…,” he noted.

The buses, which are manufactured for the United States market will be retrofitted for Jamaica’s terrain. Implementation will be done on a phased basis.

Under phase one, 50 buses will be procured by early June to commence refurbishing work for them to be put in service for the start of the new school year in September 2025.

The buses being acquired include 75, 52, 32, and 20 seat units.
