Bark Di Trute Continues To Give Solid Advice - Be Guided By It

I see some comments popping up in recent times, especially when I talk about politicians and how people behave when accosted by the police force.

I get the impression that some people are trying to change my position on these matters. They say I am biased. I say to myself, "What's new? Human beings have their biases." Even in seeking relationships with friends and potential spouses, we have our biases. Vernon is no different.

There are some hot political matters that I have dealt with in recent times. It does not matter which party I voted for; what matters is if the points made in the articles are worth considering. Telling me that I am political is neither here nor there. Stick to the issues and stay away from personalities. Everybody cannot be like you and have your opinion.

I can say to my readers confidently that many things I have written about have come to reality. My recent prediction is about the shooting of that woman in Montego Bay. It is a case that all well-thinking Jamaicans should learn from that incident. Getting hot under the collar and mass-producing these videos on social media will not help you. You must ensure that you do not get into a confrontation with the police. Do as they say; do nothing to make the officer feel threatened because it is you who will lose your life and not Vernon Derby. You cannot control the actions of a police officer, but you can control your actions and your attitude.

Remember this: only a mentally deranged person would take on an armed police officer on the street. Those who cannot hear will feel.

Full Rollout Of Police Body Cameras

Press Release From The Office Of The Prime Minister - May 24, 2026

The Honourable, Dr Andrew Holness

Prime Minister Dr. the Most Honourable Andrew Holness has reiterated the Government’s commitment to the full deployment of integrated camera systems across the Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF), including body-worn cameras, patrol car cameras, and national surveillance infrastructure, as part of a broader drive to strengthen accountability and operational effectiveness within the Force.

Prime Minister Holness said the policy direction is clear: technology must increasingly support modern policing and enhance the transparency of police-citizen interactions, particularly in high-risk and high-contact environments.

“The policy of the Government is to fully deploy camera systems for the police force. Just to be clear, there have been some discussions that seem to suggest that the government doesn't intend that everyone who interacts with the public should have a body camera. That's not the case,” Prime Minister Holness stated.

He explained that the broader system includes closed-circuit television coverage integrated into command and control centres, the continued expansion of the JamaicaEye surveillance network, and the development of a modern C5-type command centre to enhance national security coordination.

The Prime Minister also noted that while limited capability currently exists, work is underway to equip police patrol vehicles with in-car camera systems, which will form part of the wider technological architecture supporting frontline policing and operational oversight.

Turning to body-worn cameras, Prime Minister Holness said approximately 1,000 units are currently deployed within the JCF, with an additional 1,000 in procurement and further acquisitions planned as part of a phased national rollout.

He emphasized that the implementation of body-worn cameras is being undertaken in stages to ensure that the necessary supporting systems, which include training, broadband connectivity, secure data storage, and evidentiary management frameworks, are fully in place.

“We simply don't have the resources to do it all at once. There is an entire suite of activities that have to be in place before body-worn cameras become universally systemized within the JCF,” he added.

He further noted that the deployment of camera systems must reflect operational realities and varying field conditions.

“The form factor, meaning the design of the camera, can work well in certain circumstances, such as patrolling a market or conducting traffic stops, where the image is stable and hand movement does not obstruct visibility. There are situations where the body-worn camera, which is placed on the chest, is effective and appropriate. However, there are other operational contexts in which it may not work as well. In some tactical operations, for example, if an officer is crawling on the ground, the camera may be facing downward. At night or in conditions involving smoke, visibility may also be compromised. That does not mean such operations would not be covered by camera systems. Rather, the police force would need to deploy the form factor of a camera that best suits the specific operational environment,” he explained.

Prime Minister Holness emphasized that the Government’s objective is to ensure that all appropriate police-citizen interactions are captured through suitable technological solutions while safeguarding officer safety and the success of police operations.

“Just to put everybody at ease, there is no intent to say some units will have cameras and some won't. The intent is to make sure that there is this tool of accountability for our officers. And, as far as possible, that tool will be deployed as long as it does not compromise the safety of the officer or the success of a mission. Those are the general parameters within which we will deploy cameras. I want to put Jamaica at ease that we are in the process of deploying cameras. We will deploy them universally as much as possible within the Force, but we are building out the systems to ensure that these cameras work and that what they capture has evidentiary value.”

Dr. Holness said the expansion of police camera systems forms part of a wider transformation of the security architecture, designed to strengthen public trust, improve accountability, and enhance the evidentiary integrity of policing in Jamaica.

The Prime Minister was speaking on Friday (May 22) at the 91ˢᵗ Staff and Junior Command Course graduation exercise at the National Police College of Jamaica.

Editor's Note

The Prime Minister has made this announcement more than once and I know some cameras have been purchased. I still hear Jamaica For Justice calling for the police to wear body cameras!

Jamaica Is Going Over A Dangerous Precipice - Time To Stop!

Chancery Street traffic in Kingston can be chaotic.

Jamaica is going over a very dangerous precipice, and strong leaders need to stand up and be firm. I notice that some sections of society are targeting various institutions and organizations, and it is clear to me that there are people who want to create anarchy in society.

We are trying to tear down our parliament and to bring that institution into disrepute. We are now trying hard to tear down the police force so that we can do what we want to do.

Shockingly, even some people in the media are into this tearing down also. You remember how Dudus and Zeeks were made into superstars. Many claim that the US has been interfering in the internal business of other countries. It is the US that saved us from Dudus. I remember when Zeeks was detained by the police, and crowds brought activities to a halt in the city. Zeeks had to be given a megaphone to calm down the crowd and for them to go home. Vybz Kartel was one of the lucky ones, and I recall the support he got from the public. I gather that he is in the US. He will have to behave himself there.

Once again, the Jamaica Constabulary Force is being targeted. Jamaica For Justice and other groups are quick to tell the JCF members how to behave and how to do police work. Who is telling the people how to behave when accosted by police?

I am very concerned that a significant number of Jamaicans are quick to tear down those who are in authority, for those who have no intention to help to build a great society. I cannot recall when the masses last stood up for decent Jamaicans. If yu a bad man yu a star.

Let me warn the Prime Minister, the Commissioner of Police, and others to be careful that the noise of indiscipline does not drown out the voices of decent Jamaicans, which cause you to appease those who support lawlessness.

I did not hear a chorus singing in unison, supporting the work of the police in reducing murders last year, but now a questionable character gets into a confrontation with the police, and it seems as if the whole force is being condemned.

If Jamaicans were a peaceful people, then police officers would not need guns. If the people respected the police, I am sure they would be treated with class. I notice another dangerous trend. When some taxi drivers get into challenges with the police, they take matters into their own hands, and their association demands that the drivers be released. So there is no need to have a judicial system then!

Jamaica is going down a very dangerous precipice where people feel that, because they are adults, they don't need to follow the rules in parliament. When they are on the streets, police officers cannot talk to them. The curse words from citizens aimed at the police, citizens fighting with police when they are carrying out their lawful duties, and citizens encouraging other citizens to resist arrest are signs of decadence and decay. This will lead to a dysfunctional state.

Somebody needs to tell the people that you cannot challenge a policeman who has a gun, nor do anything that could put the officer's life at risk. When I was young, I was told that if you live by the sword, you will die by the sword.

Watch the video below, and you will learn what is not supposed to happen between police and citizens.

Patois in Parliament Is Shortsighted Not Strategic

Contributor

Michael Spence

There's a growing call to have Patois formalized in Parliament. The sentiment seems to be that Parliament is a domestic political dance hall, like, with little impact beyond the session. That view misses the point of what Parliament is for. It is not a talk show. It is the record where law, policy, and Jamaica’s positions in the world are set. The language used there has to carry beyond the chambers.

The Earth has 8.2 billion people. Patois comprehension is likely limited to 5 million, with 2 million people having daily utility. By comparison to the following:

  1. Mandarin: 1.4 billion indigenous speakers
  2. Spanish: 400 million
  3. English: 390 million
  4. Arabic: 340 million

Overall, English is used conversationally by over 3 billion people. That should guide what we teach in schools and what we include in CXC syllabi. English is the language of aviation, maritime, mathematics, science, and universal communication. It is the working language of trade, diplomacy, and access.

The local context can’t be ignored. Jamaica ranks among the most challenged in the Caribbean on key social indicators. It has one of the highest illiteracy rates, especially among males; one of the highest murder rates, and the 2nd lowest per capita GDP at US$7,000 (Jamaica is only above Haiti).

In that environment, language policy can’t be about vibes. It has to be about upward mobility, clarity, and global integration. Good thing most of our politicians in Parliament do not hold real economic/political power. But the language precedent they set does.

A balanced, intelligent position would be as stated below:

  1. A Patois translator in Parliament for accessibility and public inclusion. Allowing citizens to follow proceedings in the vernacular they use at home.
  2. The official language for interpretation, presentation, and record must always be English. That is the language of universal interpretation. It is what keeps us legible to investors, partners, and the diaspora.
  3. Add Mandarin and Spanish interpreters. The Chinese are now a major part of our daily wholesale and retail economic reality in the streets and elsewhere.
  4. Spanish is the second most spoken native language globally and is dominant across our region. “Ni hao” i.e. hello, “wah a gwaan”, “hola” . All three should be in the interpretation loop.

That would be innovative, practical, and forward-looking. Simply advocating for the use of Patois in Parliament is shortsighted. Inclusion is good, but lowering the standard of our official record is not.

We can honour the culture without capping the ambition. Use Patois to explain. Use English to govern. Use Mandarin and Spanish to trade. That’s how Jamaica, as a small country, "Bark di Trute" and speaks to a big world.

Editor's Notes

Our leaders need to start using parliament to discuss strategic plans and enact laws that will be relevant for another 100 years or more. Parliament has become a fish market to entertain those who need very little to entertain them.

Breaking News - Well-known Psychiatrist Dies

Dr Aggrey Irons

News has been circulating for some time about the poor health of one of Jamaica's popular psychiatrists. Someone who saw him recently confirmed to Bark Di Trute that he was not looking healthy. This afternoon, Bark Di Trute supporters informed me that well-known and loved Dr. Aggrey Ions has died.

Dr. Irons served in various positions at Bellview Hospital, was a regular voice on the radio, and was a musician who will be missed by Jamaicans. He was very involved in organizations that have helped many Jamaicans.

Please tell us about your experience with this outstanding psychiatrist by adding your comments at the bottom of this blog in the comments section.

Citizen's Promotion For The Police

Decent citizens have an obligation to support the police. Too many people are condemning the police, and most of the police have been doing a great job over the past two years. Many criminals have taken them on, and they have taken them out, and that is why I believe the murder rate has dropped significantly.

There are too many evil people in this country who are doing everything to demotivate the force. They have no respect for their authority. I have seen the videos with citizens abusing officers and inciting people who are being accosted not to listen to the police. You will notice that there is no organization that encourages citizens to relate to the police properly. It's all about how the police relate to citizens. This thing is not a one-way street.

Bark Di Trute created an Emergency Alert System for a number of government agencies, including the police. Tonight I did a promotion for the police. Please give me your feedback about this promotion.

I invite you to do something for the police. Write a poem, sing a song, or tell a story about something a good officer has done, and WhatsApp it to (876) 816-5261.

Breaking News - BA Flight Held In The Bahamas

A British Airways flight from London is being held in the Bahamas due to concerns about the health of some passengers. Some of these passengers are coming from Africa.

Two of the passengers are showing signs of the dangerous Ebola virus, now affecting some African countries. There is no vaccine for the Ebola virus.

The Hon. Rolston Anglin, Minister with responsibility for Education and Training and for Finance and Economic Development in the Cayman Islands, is also on the flight. There are other Caymanians on the flight.

Other Caribbean countries, such as Jamaica, have to monitor their ports of entry carefully.
