Mark Golding To Resurrect Democratic Socialism!

Is it true that Mark Golding, the leader of the Opposition Party in Jamaica, shall resurrect democratic socialism from the grave? Is he about to commit political suicide? Mr. Golding, I am sure that you would not want the ghost of democratic socialism to haunt the wonderful people of this nation.

Leave the dead alone. Di duppy could box yu dung fos Mr Golding. Let me go look fi mi cross because I cannot take the crosses.

Weather

Disturbance 3 is moving in the direction of the Caribbean. I hope it brings rain and no hurricane.

Jamaica/China Relations

By Michael Spence

Michael Spence

"Ni hao".

Mandarin/Chinese should be taught in Jamaican schools. China-Jamaica Economic, diplomatic, and trade relations are accompanied by frequent statements in the newspapers, Parliament, and other fora/forums objectively promoting cooperation for the development of both countries.

China today has the world's second-largest population at approximately 1.405 billion, with 1.125 billion internet users as of early 2026. The country is led by the Communist Party, with President Xi Jinping as general secretary and president.

The workforce stands at about 840 million, with overall urban unemployment at 5.1% as of December 2025 and 5.2% in July 2026.

The structure of the economy has shifted dramatically. Agriculture now accounts for 6.7%. It should be noted that China is self-sufficient in all food groups except grains. Industry is 35.6%, and services are 57.7%. China’s nominal GDP for 2026 is projected at US$20.85 trillion*, making it the second largest economy by nominal GDP and first by purchasing power.

Most Spoken Language

China’s adult literacy rate is now well above 95%. Mandarin, spoken by more than 1 billion people, remains the most spoken language on planet Earth. It is the official language of business, tourism, and diplomacy with China.

This struck me again one weekend some time ago as I stopped to buy oranges along the Bog Walk Road, and a busload of Chinese tourists arrived. After much confusion and a befuddled vendor, I was able to break the ice with _'Ni hao,' the Chinese/Mandarin for 'hello,' among the few words I’ve been learning, thanks to a Chinese haberdashery operator on Barry Street and another on Princess Street in Kingston, Jamaica.

There was one interpreter among them, who was Chinese, not Jamaican, and he seemed overwhelmed. Neither the Jamaican tour guide nor the driver spoke a word in Mandarin.

Maximize Benefits

Now that Jamaica is an approved tourist and trade destination for China, pushing closer economic ties, our guides, drivers, hotel personnel, brokers, construction workers, bankers, customs officers, immigration officers, police, vendors, and both formal and informal commercial importers—many of whom have shifted sourcing from Panama, CuraƧao, St. Maarten, and the U.S. to China. They should take advantage of opportunities to learn Mandarin and key aspects of Chinese business culture.

With China targeting 4.5% to 5% growth in 2026 and aiming to create over 12 million new urban jobs, the trade and tourism flows will only increase.

To maximize the benefits of closer ties with this rapidly emerging world power, Mandarin should be introduced immediately into the curriculum and syllabi/syllabuses of our schools.

I made some checks and discovered that the Chinese government will provide paid teachers if requested. We just need to provide housing.

Jamaica, let's do it

"Ni hao"

How We Destroyed Air Jamaica - Part IV

Working with my supervisor in the accounting department of Air Jamaica was an unusual experience. The man lived a lavish lifestyle. He did not drive a car, yet he did not take the bus. If he had to go to King Street from Harbour Street, one of his taxi drivers would take him. He was loved by all because every now and again, he would order Chinese lunch for his friends on the seventh floor.

I remember that I had to go to the bank to make lodgements for the company, and I had no security. He used to give me several cheques to cash at the bank. He told me that these were taxi drivers' cheques. He said that the bank was not willing to change their cheques because the taxi drivers had no accounts at the bank. He was my supervisor, so who was I to argue with him?

He was a big, thick man towering over me with an extended belly, probably storing all the Chinese food that he ate regularly. He had some strange-looking characters visiting him on a regular basis. I know he gave them things discreetly. After I was no longer with the company, a staff member told me that these guys were dons.

My supervisor was very popular in the company, and he made no attempt to hide what he was doing. Years later, when the police swooped down on the airline, a police officer told me that I could be in prison. I was the one who signed those cheques, which were cashed at the bank for the alleged taxi drivers. Over the years, these cheques must have totalled millions of dollars. The police showed me my signature on the cheques. I nearly peed myself in the office when I was told that these were fraudulent cheques.

I should point out that at that time, when the police swooped down on the department, I was now in another department. I must give thanks that some actions that I took saved me from prison. I had expressed my concerns to the chief internal auditor, and he confirmed this to the police. The VP for finance, who subsequently died, denied that I had a conversation with him. Wicked man.

That VP had collected a significant amount of the staff redundancy payments, and as far as I know, the staff members lost all their funds. That VP was a holy man, being a member of the Jehovah's Witnesses faith, and people trusted him.

The story started to develop now about what was happening at that level of the company. Major fraud involving those who compensated passengers for lost and damaged bags and also for transporting delayed bags. This apparently involved several staff members. I noticed that staff were being suspended left, right, and centre. I asked the VP if I should go home, and he instructed me to go and do my work.

My supervisor had now become aware that things were closing in on him. He got on the first available flight to the US. He has not been seen since. If he is still alive in the US, then we might see him soon on one of Trump's deportee flights.

Editor's Note

Please share these stories with your young people so they understand what can happen in the workplace, and they could even end up in prison.

Remember to add your comments and questions at the bottom of the blog. Some of these staff members are still around, so I have left out their names.

Wi Haffi Deadlef Di Deadlef!

I just spoke to someone whose brother is fighting for deadlef. The younger brother who is fighting for his share of the house already has a beautiful house. If the house is sold so the younger brother gets his share, then the rest of the family cannot afford to purchase a new house.

That reminds me of another issue where a father and his son living with him were about to lose their house because the father had used the house as collateral to fund the eldest son's school fees. The eldest son disappeared overseas after graduating, and he could not be found. I mentioned the story on air, and a listener called me afterwards and told me that she was sure she knows the son.

The eldest son was living in Manhattan in a lovely house, and he was on a tour of duty in the Middle East. I tracked him down, and he was in a state of shock when I called him about the loan his father had borrowed to pay his school fees. He asked, "How did you get my number?"

I threatened him and told him that if the funds were not paid within the next week and his father and brother were thrown on the street, I would inform his superiors. The funds were paid the next week. His younger brother did not even call to tell me thanks.

The gentleman with whom I was speaking tonight, said he had a story to tell me. He said a man died, and he directed his doctor, his pastor, and his lawyer to put all his money into the coffin with him.

The doctor made sure to tell the pastor and the lawyer that he put all the money he owed the man in the coffin, and he held back USD 100,000 because he had a patient who needed an operation, and the patient could not afford the cost.

The pastor said he had to confess also that he knew some people who had captured a piece of land, and they needed to move. He took back USD 50,000 from the grave out of the funds that were buried with the man.

The lawyer very quietly said to them, "You are all very dishonest men. I took all the funds that were left on the coffin, and I wrote a cheque for the full amount and placed it on top of the coffin.

The man who had died thought that the deadlef was safe with him, but when he reaches heaven or hell, he will realize that we all have to go one day, and we have to deadlef, di deadlef.

Editor's Note

When I wrote this story, I remembered that lovely former head of the Students Loan Bureau, Monica Brown.

Weather

There is a 55% possibility we will have thunderstorms tomorrow. The temperatures will be high, ranging above 31 degrees Celsius and higher.

There is a Disturbance 3 in the Atlantic. The following is a statement from the National Hurricane Centre about Disturbance 3:

Eastern Tropical Atlantic: A tropical wave is expected to move westward from the African coast early next week.

A low-pressure area may subsequently form in association with the wave as it moves westward at 15 to 20 mph across the eastern tropical Atlantic.

What's Happening - August 21, 2026

Dogs Behave Better

I have seen and heard about the intelligent behaviour of animals. We are told that these animals use their instinct. If that is so, then many of us would do better with instinct. Human beings cannot wait until the traffic light changes to red before crossing at the pedestrian crossing on South Camp Road.

On Reds Road, for example, it’s interesting to watch how the dogs wait and watch the drivers before crossing the street. They go to Red Hills Road to the pan men to get their supper.

In the video below, a taxi driver and Bark Di Truth reporter Colin Christian caught a dog as it made his way quickly across the road using the pedestrian crossing.

Never say that people behave like dogs when people display barbaric behavior. The dogs will not be happy about that.

Broken JPS Pole

The following is a report from a citizen

This light pole on Regent Street in Almond Town has been like this since Hurricane Gilbert. It has been repeatedly reported, but to no avail.

Property Of Utility Companies

Many people do not realize that the water and light meters are the property of the NWC and the JPS, respectively. The companies must have full access to their equipment. If you are going to enclose the area around the JPS meter, you should inform JPS.

Bear in mind also that if you have a gated community, the garbage collectors, the JPS, and the NWC should have access to the compound. If the entrance is closed, then residents have a responsibility to give the people and organization full access.

 The Weather

There are no weather conditions called "Disturbance 1" or "Invest 92L," for example, in the Atlantic, and therefore, the possibility of rain looks slim for Jamaica for the next week or more.
