Golden State Valkyries Makes History

The Golden State Valkyries made history on Saturday, clinching the franchise’s first WNBA championship with a 68-63 Game 7 win over the Atlanta Dream.

The Valkyries became the fastest expansion team among the major North American sports leagues (NBA, WNBA, NHL, MLB, NFL) to win a title, doing so in just their second year.

Outstanding GK Insurance Staff Member

Mathew Pinnock

Last Thursday, October 29, 2026, I journeyed to GK Insurance in New Kingston to make a report of an accident.

I went to the car park, and I parked with the front of the car facing the fence. I was instructed by the security guard to park facing out. I tried to have a conversation with her just to let her know that I am in the habit of parking that way because there are no barriers sometimes to block the vehicle from reversing too far.

She was more into giving me instructions rather than engaging in a conversation with me. I heard her instruction and was about to comply. I explained to her subsequently that I was just trying to have a conversation with her. She eventually put on a smile and indicated that she knows me.

When I entered the GK Insurance office, I was presented with a form, and I was instructed to answer the questions on the form. I protested and indicated that all the answers should be on their system. I was invited into the office by a young man who is as rare as any rare thing on earth. He was extremely courteous. I asked him why I had to complete a form with information that is already in their system. He indicated that it is because a claim was being made. Yes, Mathew Pinnock is indeed a man of class and who knows how to give good customer service. My questioning him and complaining that the system needs to be modernized did not cause him to show any sign of uneasiness.

I told him that they need to improve the system. The staff member should be able to bring up a claim form that would already be populated with my information. The staff could then take the report verbally and input it into the computer. After everything is completed, then the form could be printed for me to sign. When he realized that I was uncomfortable with the system, he made sure to assist me even further. Companies should realize that the older we get, it is not easy to read the font size on some forms.

It was a beautiful experience dealing with this staff at GK Insurance. He certainly knows how to communicate with customers, and he displayed a personality that shows that he is understanding and empathetic.

He made my day, so I had to report him to the supervisor. I found out that when a customer reports a staff member for giving good customer service at GK Insurance, they earn points. Is that why the service at GK Insurance is usually good? All is not perfect there, but I don't want to detract from the service offered by Mathew Pinnock. A wonderful Jamaican young man.

Let us continue to promote and encourage good Jamaicans.

Wake Up And Live Jamaica!

 By Michael Spence

Michael Spence

An island with 635 miles of coastline. Almost 500 miles of beach. Yet, a Jamaican family driving out on a holiday today will struggle to find a place to put down a blanket without paying a fee or being turned away at a gate.

Government records show we have only about a dozen fully operational public beaches. Campaigners estimate Jamaicans have free access to less than 3 miles of our own shoreline. Our beaches are disappearing behind walls. And that matters, because the beach is not just sand. It is memory, it is culture, and it is who we are.

We were told that when sugar was no longer king, things would change. Emancipation came in 1838. By 1890, the laws and the land patterns locked that old plantation model in place. In 1962, we raised our flag and celebrated independence. But did the structure change? Or did we just swap sugar for sun, sea, and sand?

Today it is "Plantation Tourism." Mainly foreign-owned, all-inclusive resorts. Food and all inputs are mainly imported, with profits exported. The Caribbean retains only 15 to 20 cents of every tourism dollar.

Jamaica does better, about 40 cents. Our target should be at least 60 cents. Because 60 cents is leaving, it does not circulate or multiply here.

Look at our trade. In 2025 we exported US$1.65 billion. We imported US$7.52 billion. For every $1 we earned abroad, we spent $4.50 buying from abroad, which is unsustainable. What are we spending that foreign exchange on? Fuel, parts, food, cars, and other consumer items.

We have roughly 800,000 vehicles on our roads, most of them privately owned. That Motorized Pyramid Scheme Economic Model (MPSEM) eats foreign exchange, further eating our roads, fuel, lives, and productive time in traffic jams.

As a people, we are about the 2nd poorest per capita GDP in the Caribbean. We have carried the title of one of the most murderous countries per capita in the world. 2025 showed improvement, but at 23.7 per 100,000, we are still far too high.

Our literacy rate still lags behind many CARICOM partners.

Close to 1 million Jamaicans live in informal communities. We call them squatters/internal migrants. Let us call them what they are. Jamaicans without land, without stable homes, without security, without a fair start.

This is not the Jamaica our ancestors fought for. So many are asking, "Was life better under colonialism?

Yes/No. Disenfranchisement then was by law. Today it is by economics. Both are wrong. Independence in 1962 was not necessarily a fraud. But if we only celebrate it once a year and do nothing the other 364 days, then we are betraying it.

So what do we do now? We cannot cut and run from tourism. We must own the supply side. Grow the food for our hotels in St. Rebuild St. Elizabeth, St. Ann, St. Thomas Westmoreland, St James, Clarendon and other parishes.

Train our people to manage, to build, and to own our destiny. We must buy Jamaican first. Export Jamaica beyond tourism. Bauxite, agriculture, creative and digital services. We must build Jamaica for Jamaicans—housing, schools, and public beaches. Infrastructure that serves people, not just visitors.

Demand effective, forward-thinking governance. The Bank of Jamaica has warned that the economy is under pressure. We cannot borrow and import our way out of this dilemma.

The signs are here. A trade deficit is a sign. The closed beaches is a sign. The young man without a job is a sign. High crime, including high murder, scamming, and drug trafficking, are signs.

A sign that is significant is the vulgar vilification, representation, and cursing of the present Prime Minister, Andrew Holness, like never before in Jamaica's history since Emancipation 1838/Independence 1962.

This nationwide, sadly uncivilised behaviour, "Nasty Mouthism" must end now.

The road ahead requires work. Let us walk it together. One Jamaica. One people. One future. It cannot be business as usual.

Bob Marley told us a long time ago, "Wake up and live." Life is one big road with lots of signs.

Editor's Note

Michael has given us plenty to think about. Let's spend less time on petty talk, gossip, and political propaganda. Jamaica is ours. If it fails, we all fail. We don't have to agree with everything that he says, but we should at least think about it.

Vernon's Medical Operation Date Has Been Set

A concerned doctor called me nearly two years ago to ascertain if I was taking care of myself, and he invited me to visit his office. A few weeks later, I discovered that I had various challenges, including prostate cancer. Let me point out that there were no signs or symptoms before. I felt like the healthiest man in Jamaica before my diagnosis.

It has been a rough road to travel, and I have shared my experiences with my Bark Di Trute family. They have been extremely supportive. Can you imagine, when I was told the cost of removing the prostate would be approximately JAD4 million dollars, I said to myself, "Mi dead now."

The operation will be during the week of November 17, 2026, and I hope there will be no more postponements due to other discoveries about my health. I now have to maintain good blood pressure and good blood sugar levels. People tell me that I don't look like I have any health challenges.

Can you imagine I can now pay for the operation even after spending over JMD1 million on my health for nearly two years of waiting for that operation? The monthly cost of one of the tablets, Androcur, is JAD34,000 (With NHF subsidy). People's support is something else. God really blesses me.

There are some very good people in the world, and I thank you all for your support. Some people called me every day to check up on me. When I divorced, I thought I had no one around me, but I was proven wrong. One gentleman in Florida, USA, who has prostate cancer has been very supportive. I hope and pray that he will last. His cancer has resurfaced.

There is another operation to do after the prostate is removed, but I will take it one day at a time.

All the best, my friend, and remember that without good health, you have no wealth. Find good people with good hearts and keep them close to you. Dem betta dan pocket money.

Ensure that you have a hobby that will keep you alive in those low moments. That is why I Bark Di Trute. :)
