Two Scholarships Totaling JMD 2.4 Million For UWI Students In Honour of Mrs. Violet Edwards

Mrs.Violet Edwards

Mr. Everett Algernon Smith, Esq on behalf of  the family and friends of  Mrs. Violet Edwards, has announced that two scholarships will be offered to two University of The West Indies students this year. The value of the scholarships is JMD2.4 million dollars. These scholarships are in honour of Violet Edwards. Mrs. Edwards is a phenomenal Jamaican woman,  who obtained her associate degree in the United States of America at the age of 96. She did this at a time when she was also going though a period of serious  illness.

The scholarships are being set up especially for persons who, had to discontinue their studies in the past, and who now want to continue their studies. The announcement of Mrs. Edwards achievement of graduating with a 4.0 average at the age of 96, was mentioned early in the day on Riddim FM by the host of SpotOn, Vernon Derby. Subsequently the news was picked of by major international news networks such as CNN and Fox in the USA.

The family of Mrs. Violet Edwards in recognition of  Mr. Derby's community work on radio, has appointed him to be the local representative for the Violet Edwards Scholarship. Arrangements are now being made for Mrs. Edwards to visit the island to attend a function to present the scholarships.

This phenomenal woman put off her studies in order to ensure that her daughter Christine, got a good education.. Christine is now a doctor in Florida and she does a great job serving the people in that area. Indications are that Mrs. Edwards is the oldest Jamaican to get an associate degree and  she is one of the few internationally, to get an associate degree at the age of 96.
