The Minister of Health Dr. Christopher Tufton, has just sent me the following data which is a must read:
- Over 7,300 Jamaicans experience a stroke each year.
- Leading cause of death - 82 per 100,000 population.
- Post Stroke cost approximately. $1.4M for the first six months
- Annual burden on Jamaican families is J$46B
- Stroke impact on GDP is 2.42%
- Risk factors include, high blood pressure,diabetes , cigarette smoking, obesity,and alcohol abuse.
- Over 68 per cent of stroke victims are hypertensive, over 30 per cent diabetic, and some 27 per cent are smokers;
- Policy response include ; Nutrition and physical activity guidelines for prevention, early detection and response for treatment;

I got a message from someone about the inability to get the drug, invega sustenna which is used by persons diagnosed with the illness schizophrenia. Are you aware of persons having a challenge getting that drug? If you do then Please WhatsApp me the information to 876 816-5261. I understand that one months supply of the drug costs approximately JMD55,000.00. Minister Tufton has been made aware of this matter. Thanks to the Minister for responding immediately to my message.

ReplyDeleteThis is indeed serious and of "epidemic" proportion. Its a warning especially to di "man dem". The governnent's policy must be adequate and a proportionate. But this of course cannot substitute pesonal responsbility. Dis is serious!!

ReplyDeleteRegarding Hypertension there are questions that need competent answers by relevantly qualified personell

When does one initiate treatment eg 130/80,140/90 or 150/90.
Are treatments age and or race specific.It has been noted in some literature that the older one is the higher BP is essential is there any truth to that or is it a one size fits all treatment package.
Is there any truth to findings that most people who get strokes are on High Blood Pressure medications.
