Leroy Lindsay Aviation Consultant Comments On Changing Your Seat on an Aircraft

On Tuesday, August 23, I will have as my guest Mr. Leroy Lindsay. who will share with my listeners a bit about flying and the airline industry. This is against the background of a passenger being removed from a flight after a confrontation surrounding the changing of seats with another passenger. The following note was sent to me by Mr. Lindsay:

Leroy Lindsay

Good morning Vernon. There's a matter going around at the moment about a lady moving to a seat on an aircraft, other than the one that was given to her at check-in. This can be a safety matter.

The weight and balance calculations to ensure a safe take off is done based on the seats allocation. If passengers just sit where they want to, the computers wouldn't know where the weight is on the aircraft. If an individual wishes to change seats after boarding the flight, that person should request permission from the stewardess. The stewardess would usually ask the passenger to wait until the aircraft has taken off, then allow the change of seat.

There are times when seats are checked by the ground staff or stewardess. If you change a seat without permission to do so, no one would know where that person is. Security teams at home and abroad do not take this as being funny. It's a serious thing.

Remember that the captain is in charge on the aircraft, especially after the aircraft doors are closed. He's the Commander whose directives must be adhered to at all times.

Let us fly safely.

  1. These people must think that the pilot is like a robot taxi driver! Ignorance is a hell of a curse, and Jamaica is wallowing in it. There are rules, regulations and laws. Just another demonstration of our rapid decline into lawlessness. 😥
