SpotOn On Wednesday, February 8 - Guest, Dr. Jason McKay - Criminologist

Dr. Jason McKay

Criminologist, Dr. Jason McKay will be my guest on Wednesday, February 8, 2023, during the programme SpotOn, in the Talk Yu Talk segment on Riddim FM. It is time that Jamaica starts a focused discussion on the level of crime in the country, and at least come up with some suggestions to deal with this challenge, which can garner broad support from the people. Dr. Jason McKay who is in the security business is also a Jamaica Observer columnist. Recently he published a very interesting article with the headline, The Demotivation Factor

Note that while we have had massive demonstrations in support of known criminals and dons, I cannot recall any significant uprising calling on the government to deal decisively against the scourge of crime which is crippling our country. Murders have moved from 63 in 1962 to over 1400 in 2023. This is sheer madness. The population has increased since 1962 by just over 60%! This could never be what the fathers of our independence had hoped for Jamaica!

Criminology what does that mean.
It is the study of crime and criminal behavior, informed by principles of sociology and other non-legal fields, including psychology, economics, statistics, and anthropology. Criminologists examine a variety of related areas, including: Characteristics of people who commit crimes etc.Criminology is a branch of sociological studies as opposed to a Crime Technician.

This is days of lawfulness. From 63 to 1400, this seems like 880.5 % Sir Vernon. So if our government no step up them rules of law's and order start to realize the power of enforcement in the right and proper perspective. Then it would not make a sense.

Reducing murders/crime is less about laws than the way society is organized to draw out good civilized
behaviour.
Externally imposed discipline is shortlived and cannot guarantee civilization which is the degree to which people live together in peace and harmony.
Is Jamaica a civilized society?
