Concerns & Suggestions:
1. Given the educational challenges faced by students at the secondary level, shouldn't greater attention be given to bolster literacy and numeracy at the primary level?

2. Why allow students to progress to a higher grade level if they have not proven they have met the learning objectives set out for that particular year group?

3. Make high school diploma a standardized qualification for graduating from fifth form. Not a high school leaving certificate. This means obtaining 5 or more subjects in CSEC, City and guilds or any other recognized qualification for secondary schools.

4. Revive the school book rental system. Some parents can not afford textbooks.

5. Enlist the help of literacy and numeracy specialists at the primary school level instead of at the secondary school level. Stop sending them to high schools unprepared. Early invention is key. Phase out the current tide of students who require this type of intervention at the secondary school level.

6. What are your plans to arrest the wave of indiscipline and violence in schools?

We need to help our children become functional members of this increasingly dysfunctional society. We need to institute a program of resocialization, beginning from basic school, all the way up to high school. The 1st term of school should see nothing being taught except values, character development and social graces. Children preparing for external exams would only undergo one month of such training. I believe that this resocialization effort would make it easier for teachers to impart knowledge as the kids would be more disciplined and receptive to learning. We should try to reach our kids while they are a captive audience in school and change the trajectory of our country. We should also include character studies and ethics in the curriculum of Teachers' College to ensure that what the kids are being taught is reinforced. The government may seek to institute a state-wide values and attribute programme to help the rest of the society, including our parents to take responsibility and to assist in reshaping our culture of aggression and violence.
