Wednesday, July 5 we will be SpotOn with a young and ambitious gentleman whose name is Jermaine Hurd and who sings under the state name Atuela. Jermaine was born in St. Ann in a district called Bohemia and he attended the Bohemia All-Age School
These are the words of Jermaine Hurd popular known as Atuela:
I can remember dancing and singing for my grandparents, and this was where the passion came about.
I was deeply influenced by artistes such as Michael Jackson, the Melody Makers, Musical Youth, Nadine Southerland, Junior Tucker, and the King Yellow Man.
What I can remember is that Gregory Isaac said, “Skip never quit”.
Richie Spice told me my time will come - put in the work.
One of my most real motivations came about from a stranger. I can remember I was in Kingston doing some 9 to 5, and on the complex where I was working were some highly respectable people. I was humming a song on the job while dropping some items on the outside and one of my coworkers overheard me and said “Mi waa hear you sing mon, not hum”, and I started singing not realizing that I was disrupting a lawyer’s office Mr. Vernon Darby as I was by the window.
I later saw him that day and he asked, “The person I heard singing today, was that you?”, I replied “Yes”,
He said, "Tell you what, you take my advice go home and practice your craft and get back to me”, I took his advice and went home.
I practiced almost every day. I’ve never done any voice training. It’s God’s given talent that I possess.
I enjoy what I do - compose good music.
