Winston Williams |
I just received information from a reliable source that well-known Jamaican broadcaster Winston Williams, is no longer with us. Winston was known as 'The whip with the solid kick'. in his heyday, the man with the booming voice and infectious laughter was a well-sought-after MC. He worked at various places such as the now-defunct Jamaica Broadcasting Corporation (JBC) and also at Power 106.
He was known for his impeccable diction and his creative use of words. He had that energetic sound on the radio which forced us to listen to him. Winston was also known for his ability to read news well, on JBC.

ReplyDeleteOh man...an era has passed away! The man was legendary. I was totally entertained by the greatest DJ and broadcaster. He made the Jamaican experience complete.
ReplyDeleteHe was 83. My Dear Friend, mi Bredren, my sparring partner. A whole heap a roast fish we eat together dung a Father Binns ina Grenage Farm.
ReplyDeleteFly away HOME Winston, Your work is done, well done. RIEP..
Real veteran. Grew up listening to the WHIP on JBC radio and truly admired the commitment he brought to his craft. He distinguished himself as a true broadcasting icon. Winston did what he came to do. MHSFRIP
ReplyDeleteHe would introduce Ina Pine who presented the weather forecast. He would ALWAYS say “Hello Ina, we’re pining for good weather”. Loved his crisp diction.
ReplyDeleteA broadcaster of legendary proportions has turned off his mic forever. But his sound will resound will through time.
DeleteWinnie, you "kicked" up a storm. That was enough for us.
Rest in peace, my friend.
l remember as a school boy at Manchester High school in Mandeville, going on a trip to tour a number of places in Kingston. One of the places was the JBC studio. When we got there Winston was on air doing his afternoon program. l can't forget a very whitty comment he made (he and Don Topping who was on RJR were the major afternoon programs at the time) He said " why bother with the topping when you can have the whole cake"
