Press Release from the Jamaica Labour Party:
Prime Minister the Most Honourable Andrew Holness, leader of the Jamaica Labour Party, reflects on the party's formation and its commitment to the welfare of Jamaicans. He emphasizes, "The formation of the Jamaica Labour Party was a direct response to the need for greater political representation of the poor and working class, stemming from the workers' strikes and agitation that began in 1938. Led by Sir Alexander Bustamante, the JLP's roots lie in the labour movement, with Bustamante's advocacy for just wages and improved working conditions resonating strongly with the most vulnerable workers. It was through the efforts of the Bustamante Industrial Trade Union (BITU) that the JLP came into being in 1943."
Under Bustamante's leadership, the JLP grew to represent the interests of the working class, advocating for their rights and working towards a more equitable society. Over the years, the JLP has continued to prioritize infrastructure development, job creation, and economic growth, ensuring that every Jamaican has access to opportunities for success and prosperity. The party's unwavering commitment to education reform has played a pivotal role in empowering Jamaican youth with the knowledge and skills necessary for a rapidly changing world.
The JLP's dedication to the welfare of Jamaicans has been particularly evident during the challenging period of the COVID-19 pandemic. As a party in government, the JLP worked tirelessly to implement measures to safeguard public health, support businesses, and provide relief to affected individuals through the CARE programs. These initiatives aimed to ensure economic stability and protect the well-being of Jamaicans amidst the global instability caused by the pandemic.
Chairman of the Jamaica Labour Party, Robert Montague, reflects on the JLP's political legacy. He remarks, "In the 1944 general elections, the JLP emerged victorious, securing 22 of the 32 seats. The party continued its success by winning the 1949 elections, albeit with a reduced majority. However, it faced defeat in the 1955 elections and remained in opposition after the 1959 elections. The JLP made a triumphant return in 1962, leading Jamaica towards political independence and a decade of remarkable growth and development between 1962 and 1972. Returning to power in 1980, the JLP steered Jamaica towards development once again. Seaga is credited with preventing the further destruction of Jamaica economically."
He added, we returned to power in 2007 after one of the most disastrous periods in Jamaica's history. We faced an economy that was unprepared for another global shock, but our then Prime Minister, Bruce Golding, played a vital role in sustaining Jamaica. Although we experienced a loss in 2012, the people of Jamaica once again placed their trust in us in 2016, seeking prosperity. This confidence has led to one of the most successful economic and social periods in Jamaican history."
Dr. Horace Chang, General Secretary of the Jamaica Labour Party, highlights the party's commitment to protecting the rights and promoting the development of the Jamaican people. He emphasizes the JLP's significant contributions, including the framing of the Jamaican Constitution in 1961 under the guidance of founding father Edward Seaga. The JLP's efforts led to the inclusion of a Charter of Fundamental Rights and Freedoms in the Constitution, as well as the establishment of the office of the Public Defender, ensuring the protection of Jamaicans' fundamental rights.
As the Jamaica Labour Party celebrates its 80th anniversary, it stands proud of its legacy of progress and development. The party's stewardship of Jamaica has been marked by resilience, innovation, and a commitment to the well-being of its people. Looking ahead, the JLP remains dedicated to building a prosperous and inclusive Jamaica, where every citizen can thrive and contribute to the nation's continued growth.
