TRANSPORT AUTHORITY CONDEMNS THE ABUSE OF THE SCHOOL GIRL WHO REFUSED TO PAY FULL FARE

The Transport Authority is condemning the action of a taxi driver, who is shown in a video being circulated, verbally abusing a school girl in uniform who refused to pay the full fare being demanded by the operator.

Following quick actions by the Authority a meeting was held with the owner of the taxi who subsequently relieved the driver of his duties.  The driver was also arrested and charged for common assault by the Old Harbour Police and warned for prosecution by the Transport Authority for operating without a badge, failure to wear uniform and for unlawfully deceiving a passenger as to the fare for a journey” under regulation 129 (d) of the Road Traffic Regulations.

In the meantime, the Authority is reminding operators that children, students (in uniform), physically disabled and senior citizens pay HALF (1/2) of the approved fare.  Any deviation will result in prosecution under regulation 129 (d) of the Road Traffic Regulations and may be fined up $100,000.00 if convicted for the offence under section 107(3) of the Road Traffic Act.

The Authority is reminding operators that it is their responsibility to preserve the rights of all passengers and more so children passengers.

Additionally, the Authority is urging the public to report acts of overcharging by calling toll-free 1-888-991-5687 or 876 926-8912; or WhatsApp images or videos to 876-551-8196 or 876 279-8515. Complaints about overcharging should include the licence plate numbers, the routes for the vehicles or the location of the incident. Commuters may also download the Drive Safe Jamaica and Travel Pal apps from the Google Play or App stores and submit your images, videos or complaints on these portals.
