Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and his Family to Escape Cold Canadian Weather in Jamaica

The Prime Minister of Canada will enjoy a warm Christmas in Jamaica with his family from December 26, 2023, to January 4, 2024.

Former Commanding Officer of the JDF Airwing, Lt Col Oscar Derby, recalls that PM Justin Trudeau was a lad when he travelled to Jamaica in the late 70's with his brother and parents. Justin Trudeau's father Pierre Trudeau was the Prime Minister of Canada. Col. Derby later became the head of the Jamaica Civil Aviation Authority (CAA), and then the Chairman of the CAA Board.

Col. Derby, a Captain then, had the honour of flying the Trudeau family from the Sangster International Airport to St. Mary.

Col. Derby says his Co-pilot was Canadian Armed Forces Standards Check Pilot Capt. Dennis Carey. Capt. Carey was in Jamaica, for the annual JDF Air Wing Standards Check for Pilots.   He was seeing his PM in the flesh for the first time. Capt. Carey was not aware of who the passengers were. He was in shock, as was PM Trudeau who wondered what this Canadian Pilot was doing in Jamaica.  Col. Derby explained the long relationship between Jamaica and Canada involving training under the Commonwealth Military Assistance Programme.

That day they also flew PMs Maurice Bishop, Tom Adams, and Michael Manley, who attended a CARICOM Heads of Government Meeting in Ocho Rios.

This is one of the rare times that one hears from Col. Oscar Derby about his days serving his country as an army man. Many will recall that Col. Derby played a role in preventing a helicopter accident which could have ended his life and that of Prime Minister Michael Manley.
